Help: Wiring Pioneer 8000NEX, OEM Audio Plus, Beatsonic Backup camera
 

I decided to save some money and do the install myself. I have never worked on a car before, so I thought I'd double the time most people mentioned it took them to do installs. This is a bit overwhelming.

I thought it would take 6-8 hours to complete the job. After 9 hours, I am about 3/4 done... I think.

There are some wires I am having trouble connecting to the FR-S

1) Reverse-Gear Signal Input Purple/White Wire (Pioneer 8000NEX)
2) Reverse Signal Red Wire (BeatSonic BCAM7 Rear Camera)
3) Pin #2 on 28pin OEM Harness?
4) Car Speed Signal Input Pink Wire (Pioneer 8000NEX)

I am not sure but do I crimp 1), 2), and 3) together?

Have no idea what to do with the "Car Speed Signal Input" Wire

I got some useful info from this thread but not 100% about some stuff.

It sounded like people were connecting the three antenna wires together (Blue/White from Pioneer NEX harness, Blue from the Metra 10-pin Harness, and Blue from Antenna Adapter). Is this correct?

Are the 28pin and 16Pin OEM harnesses located behind the HU or next to the kickplate?

Yes, wire 1, 2 and 3 together. For the car speed wire, that's pin 17 on the 28-pin harness for VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

Both 28 and 16 pin harnesses are the ones behind the HU.

Just be glad you didn't have to pull new wire into the door panels. Getting them through the stupid rubber flex hoses is the biggest PITA to do.

I found the 28pin harness! but I can't find the 16pin (D11) harness ><

In this thread (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29390), F1point4 noted that he is missing a connector (I think the 16pin). I only have those 5 connectors behind my HU (2nd photo).

Instead of using the wire from D11, could I use the PAC-TR7's white wire? (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8585)

I just helped my friend this weekend do this on Saturday! Haha! You need to tap the reverse wire on the kick panel by the hood release, pin #5. You can use the posilock. You can see the photo on the beatsonic directions. You connect this to the purple/white wire on the head unit.

The red wire on the camera is power, so just tap a 12v line. I think you can just tap one of the tail lights or the trunk light. My friend had a split connector with an extra power source on his head unit, so we just used that.

Pro tip: A Big ZipTie (To use as a cable fisher) and some cable lube.

I thought the camera red-wire (reverse-signal wire) connects to the car's pink wire? is this incorrect?

I thought black is ground? or is that the 12V wire?

@ Petras, Imrac, I tried to get the camera wire through the trunk's rubber flex hose. After toying with it for an hour, I gave up. I tried to use a thin steel rod and taped it the wire to lead it down the flex tube... was too tight~ didn't think to use lubricant though...hmm...

I think it's easiest to think of this as two sets of wires; one set for the camera, and one set for the head unit. The camera is powered on the red wire via 12V and grounds via the black wire. The head unit connects to the car's reverse signal, which activates the camera view.

The instructions from beat sonic can get a little confusing because they also sell an adaptor to integrate into the OEM head unit. I think there also may be some issues with the translation as well, as Jeff and I also struggled for a bit with the ambiguous names. Your situation is easier; you don't need an adaptor because you have a dedicated reverse signal input on your aftermarket head unit.

Camera
- black wire is ground: connect this to the factory ground point in the trunk. it's hiding under the trunk latch cover (plastic trim piece between the two fabric parts of the trunk interior. We used a spade terminal (u shaped connector) to connect at this point.
- red wire is power:, connect this to a 12v source. I've wired this towards the front of the car, but it's probably easier to find something in the trunk (brake lights? Dome light?). Jeff had an extra 12v female bullet connector on his head unit wiring harness so we just plugged into that (male bullet connector).

Head unit
- purple/white wire on the head unit is reverse signal input. connect this to pin #5 (pink wire) under the kick panel. This is the hardest to reach pink wire, steps 1-4 here: http://beatsonicusa.com/DIY/DIY_2013_Scion_FRS.pdf . You'll see two pink wires facing you on the front row of the connector, the pin #5 wire is tucked away on the back row. Remember, you only need to follow up to step 4. Step 5 doesn't apply to you because your head unit already has a dedicated input. You just need to connect that tapped wire to your head unit's purple/white wire. We used bullet connectors for this point.

You just need to feed a little bit of the wire into that rubber hose. It's an accordion boot; you can feel the camera wires in the accordion boot so you can feed it through that way. I'm not sure how to explain this in words, but basically you just stretch the accordion boot over the wire and keep feeding it through. It's a pain, but I did it without spraying any lube. Make sure to disconnect the flex hose from the car at both ends (the trunk lid and the trunk), as that will make installation easier.

I only used lube at the front of the car, for installing the OEM Audio + power wire, through the rubber grommet on the firewall. You don't need anything special; we sprayed window cleaner in there, haha!

Was super busy the last several days. Finally was able to get extra supplies and work on it today.

I ended up picking up some 16 gauge cable from Home Depot and extending the Camera's black and red wires to the HU and used the (black) ground wire and 12v (red) wire there.

For the reverse signal input I used SVXdc's 28-pin harness and 4-ft wire (one end has a pin termination that slides into the OEM harness) to tap into the kickpanel's pin#5.

As for the trunk rubber hose, my 10 Series has extra wiring going through there, so there isn't enough room to route the wire though easily. Since the cable has two parts and I extended the red/black wires - the two halves meet in the trunk. This will allow me to disconnect the camera easily, if I ever choose to swap out the license plate frame.

I recommend that people tap into the factory wire on the back side of that harness junction in the driver's footwell (nearer to the firewall), since that side has more exposed length to work with. The factory color is orange/white on that side, which is the reason I provided the 4-foot wire in that same color.

And to elaborate a little: Unlike BRZ, the FR-S does not have the reverse gear signal on the factory 28-pin radio harness. FR-S also does not have the 16-pin harness with the parking brake signal.

kuro wanted to add the reverse gear signal to the vacant slot on his factory 28-pin harness, so that he could then use a 28-pin "forward" harness that I supplied to access the rev. gear signal and speed signal (VSS), and retain the factory 3.5mm aux jack. That allows him to easily unplug all of the harnesses to remove the Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX, leaving the factory harnesses intact (and able to be plugged back into the factory radio).

One additional thought about powering a rear camera: If you only want to be able to view the camera while you're in reverse, connect things as kuro did:

Car's 12V reverse gear signal -> HU's reverse gear input & -> camera's (+) power lead

(join those 3 wires).

But if you want the ability to view the rear camera at any time (which many aftermarket HUs permit), connect things this way instead:

Car's 12V reverse gear signal -> HU's reverse gear input

and

Car's +12V Accessory power -> camera's (+) power lead
