Crappy Head Unit ? Why !

Ok , so I have only had my car for 2wks, and I already dont understand why the stock ugly radio which you can buy from Scion for about 400 dollars ... why should it stay in my car ?

After all, i Just saw the following UNIT on Crutchfield - for a mere 199 ! Now both of these dont have NAVI, but they are apples-to-apples.
both have BT, Phone and IPOD direct.

So, someone talk me out of it but it looks like an easy, inexpensive and perfect choice. Oh yea, the Alpine unit does 4 different colors including the stock scion AMBER.. HMMMM

b
BTW, for about another 300 i can get the NAVI as well ---

Save your money. The stock one has grown on me :)
The alternative looks too 80s boomboxish

Post the 300 extra nav alternative

I like the stock one better...

I agree, the more I use it, and see it, the more the stock unit seems to fit the car interior and serve my needs. Its functional and very usable. I also agree it is better looking than the 80's boombox model pictured above.

If I do replace it, it would be with a full NAV unit with real knobs. I hate touch screens when driving. Its an accident waiting to happen.

The feature I really love is the scan button, never had that before
Beats having to constantly be tapping buttons to flip through channels to hear what's on

I like the Pioneer AVIC D3 unit.. can match the amber scion color.. but also has touch screen.. and Sat/Nav..

I was going to get an aftermarket one until I realized the opening isn't standard double din and needs filler pieces on each side. I'll stick with the factory look.

The one thing I'd really like to change is for the text display on the scion unit to be amber rather than to too-bright-white at night.

There is something about the stock Pioneer unit that appealed to me from the start, but I'll admit right away it probably only appeals to me: It has the same spare look that the highest-end shortwave radios have. Rack-mounted, built for function--not looks, and does a lot of stuff that doesn't have a front-facing button. But like I said, that's just me.

You aren't alone. I happen to like it as well. Fits the minimalist interior.

In all honesty, it doesn't bother me the stock radio. It isn't overly complicated and it isn't gaudy like aftermarket ones.

So touch screens suck eh? I'll keep that in mind when I finally put the KEY Map away and make my way into the 21st century.

He didn't say they "suck", he simply was stating his personal dislike of them, no need for insults.

Normally I just use a sextant and shoot the stars. Dead reckoning is the way real men do it.
