A good point, but I think this new format will help this problem get better, not the other way around.
With the "open floor" format they had in years past, it was a breeding ground for douche-bags and almost encouraged people to do stupid shit, what with the "hive mentality" and all that.
The major appeal of Ertefa, and what made it unique in this day and age, has always been the "open floor" format, because EVERYONE can be a part of it, whether you drive this or that or whatever. It was different. You literally have a mint muscle car, sitting next to a done-up Civic, sitting next to a Gallardo, sitting next to a low-rider on three wheels. There's a little bit of everything! There was no registering in advance, paying entry fees, having to go through all this prep etc. such as with shows like ImportFest or the like. You drive there, you park, and that's it. Unfortunately, this also created the situation where the group (Ertefa) had little to no control over the event, as it was an open format. Basically, everyone is invited. Some people took that to also mean "anything goes".
The basic format hasn't changed; everyone is still invited, but at least now they have a fee in place that I think will eliminate a lot of the real losers who won't want to pay to get in. Not only that, but being in a new TYPE of venue will help drastically as well. This was always a "parking-lot" style meet in the past, where the meet would take over the parking lot of a plaza or shopping centre. That creates a scenario where douche-bags, and those who may have just been driving by, may be more inclined to do something stupid to show off to the crowds. It's also hard to kick someone out of a parking lot; ie if someone does something stupid in the plaza parking lot and an Ertefa representative asks them to leave, the person would be much less likely to listen unless a police officer is nearby. This venue is a lot more of a "closed" venue, without the possibility of any ignorant asshole pulling in off the street, doing something stupid, and ruining the meet for 1000's of others who were there to be responsible. I went to the ONE meet they managed to have last year, and while the turn-out and machinery were awesome, it was absolute chaos.
Now, at least, it seems like this is much better organized, and Ertefa, with the help of police, will have a lot more control over what happens, more control over who they can ask to leave, and more ability to remove anyone who is a problem.
I probably won't make it out tonight because I have other obligations, but I think this event is taking steps to move in the right direction while trying to keep as much of the original format as possible.
Let's see how tonight goes, and if this carries on, I will certainly be attending in the future!
