ZX88's TRD GT86 Daily Driver

Hi Everyone,

I figure I finally create a build thread as Ive owned my car for about 6 months now.

About my past.

Coming from the Nissan and Honda World my Frs was my first jump into the wold of Toyota/Subaru.

Here are some of my past/other projects.

1992 Nissan 240sx (my first car). Originally purchased in 2004 Ive owned this thing for about 11 years now. Ive built this care bassically from the ground up. The car started its life as a super clean, automatic grandma driven beast. Since Ive owned it, I swapped in an SR, Upgraded the turbo (td05h), Replaced the interior (bride/eastbear seats), fully suspension (Yamatto Garage arms and Part Shop Max Coilovers) and much, much more...picking up some rare JDM along the process.

I bought my frs in December of 2014 to replace my old daily, a 2005 acura TL. I loved that car and racked up 215,000 miles on it during my ownership. The car was great but it was getting tired and I wanted something more fun, that had more aftermarket support. The car was cool (I definitly miss the extra doors).

Anyways not much done to it other than updating to an ASpec Kit, BC coilovers, and MB battle wheels.

Well lets move on,

I bought my 13 used that had some upgrades from the previous owner. They included. Swift Sport Springs, Motegi MR7 wheels with Michelin PPS tires, Reseng Cam Plate, ISIS exhaust, and APR from diffuser and Wing.

I got a great deal and the car only had 6k on the clock. The nice part was the mods done to the car we well done and done correctly.

I wasnt really feeling the boy racer spec wing so I removed it to replace with a TRD spoiler. I also replaced all the emblems to Toyota specific ones.

http://i575.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps9r1hlglg.png

At that time I also put in an order for a TRD front lip and sideskirts. I was told it would take 8-10 weeks to arrive from japan but that actually turned into closer to 5 months to get everything... It was well worth the wait so we will get into that later.

In the meantime I replaced the Motegis since I wanted something a little wider that filled the well better. I ended up going with some vordoven form 9 wheels since I got a good deal, they looked good, and would hold me off till I become more decisive on what route I wanted to go with the car overall ( possibly blitz, work, or Rays in the future)... I just dont know.

I was surprised how good they look with the drop the swift sports give. Looks good, its a manageable height so no scraping/ fender clearance issues. Jumping up from 8.5" wide wheel to a 9.5" was a pretty noticeable difference but it wasn't too bad.

Ive always hated the stock headlights that came with these cars, they look cheap and in my opinion are boring. I really wanted to upgrade to some JDM headlights, but that just wasn't in the budget at this time... So I ended up getting some chrome winjet headlights and baking them/ painting them... The process was pretty easy and the lights were actually really good quality. Here is the end result.

Installing them (pretty simple)

The end result looked pretty close to the real thing in my opinion.

I like the upgrades you made to replace the previous owner's choices, especially the wheels...:w00t:

Nice!

Thank you for keeping stock fenders on the 180. I can't stand it when people put overs on a 180 with type x aero. It just looks god awful to me.

Welcome

TRD Side Skirt Install Tutorial.

So when I was doing research about installing the trd stuff I noticed no ones had done a write up for the side skirts. Im going to attempt to document the steps to maybe give those thinking about going this route some insight. (its really simple)

Side Skirts

Time (1-2.5 hours)
Parts needed: TRD side skirt clip and install kit (included if you buy from a dealership)
Tools Needed: Philips screwdriver, trim removal tool (recommended but not required)

Step 1: Look at the bottom of the rocker panel and you will see a series of rubber plugs. You will want to remove the three middle plugs via a trim removal tool. Mine had what it looks like some rubberized spray on the panel so don’t be afraid that it peels off when you remove the plugs (there us paint underneath).

Step2: Clean the areas around the three holes so that there isn’t any hanging paint around the holes and apply the rubber washers that have 3m on the backing. Its not super critical to get these to line up perfectly since they are larger than the holes themselves.

Step 3: Remove the push clip from the rocker panel towerds the front wheel well with your trim piece remover.

Step 4: Remove two (top 2) of three screws at the front fender that holds the fender liners to the back of the front wheel well.

(picture is of the screws at the front bumper but they are the same)

Step 5: Using the template (sticker paper) provided in the install kit. Cut it out and apply it to the front of the rear wheel well. Note where the horizontal lines on the template are with some painters tape since you will use these to place the two clips that will hold the shirt at the back.

http://i575.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0tvrpxx3.jpg

Step 6: Remove the template and install the two fender clips in their correct place (use the painters tape for reference)

http://i575.photobucket.com/albums/s...psntez9b1z.jpg

Step 7: Test fit the shirt to make sure the holes line up with the clip.

Step 8: Prep the mounting surface with some wax/degreaser.

Step 9: Remove part the 3m double sided tape from the back of the side skirt. It is recommended to peel off a small part and tape (the red overlay) and bend it over to the outside of the skirt. (This will make it easier or move it around if it doesn’t line up correctly as well as help with the adhesion in the next step).

refer to 6:31 of this video if you dont understand.

Step 10: Screw In the skirt via the supplied screws that come in the kit (Rear) and attach the front via the 2 push clips.

REAR:

FRONT:

Step 11: Place the three plugs that go into the bottom of the rocker panel, that attach the skirt at the bottom. At this time also replaced the front push clip on the rocker near the front wheel well.

Step 12: Check for fitment if it all looks good start removing the rest of the red film from the double sided tape while apply pressure to the tape as you move across the side skirt.

Thats it. Super simple

Next Up the Front Lip.

ZX88 01-17-2016 11:05 PM

Its been a while so I have but quite a few updates.

Installed the JDM TRD front lip and Cannards getting rid of all the APR stuff. Also picked up a set of Modellista rear spats from JapanParts.com. Painted those bad boys and installed them over the weekend.

Also installed some TOMS led tail lights (red variation) (these are sick)

Lastly I got a custom adapter built so that i can run sick old school shift knobs from my nissan collection.

Old School Pivot Quick Shift Knob -old school - new school application

Lastly today i finnaly installed Mtech shifter springs and let me tell you I should have installed them earlier. Its insane how a $30 mod makes the car so much more enjoyable to drive.
