I work for a company that also makes air bags and we have been aware of this for years now.
Takata changed their engineering in 2008 to address the issue (they knew about it for a long time before the info came out) so anything made after that should be fine.
And too preach on my favorite topic, the hazard that the defect causes is equivalent to having a poorly attached emblem on the steering wheel so if you must change it be bloody sure it is properly attached.
