Mystery tune, believed to be ecutek, need help!
I purchased a brz, shortly after I purchased an open flash tablet only to discover that the ecu is locked with what I have come to believe is an ecutek tune. I have now purchased an ecutek cable, only to discover that I can't install the software without a dongle? I talked to joe at dynotronics, I guess I misunderstood him when he told me all I needed was the cable to pull a copy of the rom so I could get my license key read? After reading online and searching I was under the impression that the dongle was the license key, and that after using it, it was no longer needed? I have emailed ecutek, they are closed right now so I'm posting here in the meantime. I live in lower Alabama, and the closest ecutek tuner is 6hrs away in Georgia, so going to an ecutek tuner shop to have it read isn't an option.
My questions: Do I need the dongle or not? I'm assuming I do, just looking for confirmation. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? If applicable-Does anyone have a dongle I can borrow so I can install this software? |
The dongle is basically the software license, not the ECU license. If you can get hold of a dongle you can flash a stick ROM and remove ECUtek. However you can purchase a dongle, why not sell the OFT and use ECUtek seeing as you have the most expensive part already?

The oft is already listed for sale.

Where can I get a dongle? And how much are they?
|
I can't find anywhere to purchase the dongle only. This license stuff has me confused, especially when I find different info as to what is what exactly.
So far I understand that there are two separate licenses, one for the ecu, one for the software. The dongle contains both? Or is the license in the ecu the same? |

The cable just allows you to connect laptop to car The dongle contains the licience for the ecutek software that you run on your laptop to use the cable to communicate with the ecu in your car to log data . on you car and i believe other 86/brz. If you want to flash a tune then you need to buy an ecu licience for each ecu ie car you wish to flash to. This licience ends up in the ecu of the car. Your car will already have the ecu licience embedded in it from when it was flashed with ecutek. The ecu licience is non transferable The software licience and dongle is transferable An ecutek dealer\tuner should be able to sell you a dongle and licience talk to moto east or delicious tuning they are pretty active on this forum. or who ever you bought the cable from. |
When I broke my dongle I was able to purchase a replacement. It's ~£100 here in the UK if I remember correctly. I didn't need to get anything else, so Master Tuners are able to order replacement dongles. As these have no relevance to specific cables or ECU then it's a simple purchase, however it's strange that the dongle wasn't supplied with the cable, as is normally the case. Have you spoken to the person who sold you the cable?
ECU license and dongle are completely independent. I can use my dongle & cable to flash and log any ECUtek ECU. When tuners lock tunes they lock them to your dongle ID, not your ECU. |
I purchased the cable from forum member. I paid $340 for the cable. Did I get ripped off?

How do I find my dongle ID?

http://www.delicioustuning.com/catalog/38 http://www.delicioustuning.com/Produ...mming-Kit.aspx anyhow suggest you contact either of the ecutek guys below they are pretty active here and should be able to sort out your licensing issues and sort you out with a flash&go tune @moto-mike @DeliciousTuning |
A flash and go tune? So I have to do a complete retune with stock maps? Why did everyone say all I needed was a damn cable then and that I could keep the tune? And that I already had the most expensive part of the tune with the license in the ecu? What if it was tuned on a dyno or street tune? Why would I go to a stock map? If I did reflash, it certainly wouldn't be ecutek after all this bull.

IF it's true you already have the license in the ECU, and a tune, then yes, you already have the most expensive part. $340 for a cable only was pretty steep, but it's not the seller's fault, you agreed to buy it for that price, you should have done research as to how much they go brand new if you wanted to get it new/pay less. So, if you already have the cable, you just need to contact any of the master tuners (Delicious tuning, Moto East, Dynosty, Drift Office, Visconti etc, etc...) so that they can get a dongle to you. The dongle allows you to run the software in the computer. The flashing license is embedded into the ECU first time the ECU is flashed with Ecutek. So, if it's true your car has an Ecutek flash in it, you don't need to do anything, unless you want to get a new tune, or get new parts and tune for them. You are pretty much set at this point. You can get the dongle/cable and do logs to see that everything is running right, not knocking, not lean, etc..... |
