Is there a perfect header back exhaust?
 

So although I love my BRZ, It's time for me to able to hear the boxer for all it is. At first I was going to go with a Corsa Catback exhaust but then decided if I'm going to spend over $1000 I want something that's going to give me a few extra HP and have a little bit more character to it's exhaust note (without being so ignorantly loud / droney and or ricey).

So basically my question to you guys is, is there a header back exhaust that will give me a few extra horses via the OP/DP/etc while not being so loud I regret buying it in the first place? I'm decently new to the forums and I know some of you guys know your exhausts really well. Hope you guys could give me some suggestions

I really like the way the SRT Header Back sounds but I feel like it may be too loud...which is unfortunate because the tone is so great. :(

SRT will be loud. @Clipdat has one and im pretty sure he brought it to a shop to have them quite it down some.

To get the rumbles, you really need a header, and an EUL one at that. Most people piece together their exhaust, as there are much more options for individual pieces and combinations than there are header backs available.

Right, I've noticed most people piece theirs together. The only problem with that is you have no idea how it's going to sound.. I'm just trying to avoid buying something, installing it, and then disliking it.

I was hoping there was an easy solution but I guess there isn't. I'm pretty interested in nameless as well.

IIRC perrin's 3" might be ok gains-wise. But of course, only with stock header, as it will get too loud with catless header. With stock it should be somewhat on unresonated 2.5" perrin loudness level.

You Tube will be your ally, plenty of combination.

I doubt youtube has listed power gains for all the exhaust variant videos. :) And I doubt that it makes much sense to compare loudness levels between videos with unknown record volume levels between them.

The corsa exhausts was always one of my favorites when I was shopping around for an aftermarket option myself.

As others have probably mentioned , if you're after that boxer rumble you'll want to pick up a reputable UEL, which should also offer the performance upgrade you desire; IMO a corsa cat back with a UEL would probably sound sexy as **** - and your OP, DP options are fairly wide -open, and subjective.

GL with whichever you decide, and don't forget to post-up a sound clip after you've made your decision, and have had everything installed :D

Perfect exhaust is really subjective due to individuals tastes in sound etc. All I can say is decide if you want the boxer rumble or not to decide on uel/el for your header then you can go from there.

I'm biased, but I haven't heard anything better than JDL UEL catless + JDL catted/resonated FP + Perrin resonated 2.5". So deep and rumbly. It's so deep at low revs, though, that it resonates through my entire parking garage at work and sets off car alarms, even though it's not that loud.

My set up ended up sounding exactly how I wanted. Def not too loud. Just wanted a little sound without attracting cops.

I owned the full SRT header back for 3 months before modifying it to be a little quieter. 100% of people that heard my car with the SRT exhaust at full tilt banging through gears have said they love it and it sounds like a exotic. I have to agree with them, its a truly unique sound. I replaced the dual mufflers with a single exit Greddy Ti muffler, that had a bigger muffler than the two SRT oval cans. It took away the low loudness but added some volume up top. Cold start with any exhaust system is loud as hell anyway. I recommend going to a local meet and asking other owners to hear their cars. I agree that Perrin makes some great options, with subtle volume increases.

I am not a exhaust system expert but I think a single exit mandrel bent header back system is the way to go, power wise. The Tanabe single exit isn't to loud and the Megan single exit is cost effective.

I put the SRT headerback on with under 100 miles on my FR-S and it was way too loud for DD/street driving. Yes, it sounded extremely aggressive even on the stock header, and the overpipe & secondary cat delete helped the throttle response, but the drone was absolutely insane on the freeway.

I paid an exhaust shop a fair amount of money to mod it into a catback, and also weld the exhaust instead of using band clamps. Now it's managable but still really really loud. Sounds amazing though, super super low and bassy exhaust note. But when you open it up all the bass goes away and it has a great tone.

All that being said SRT is a shit company and nobody should give them any money. Feel free to search all the threads on this forum and read about how they took a huge shit on the community/the forum around the end of 2012/beginning of 2013. There's a number of other "dual canister" style exhausts out there that will sound equally aggressive and deep.

This, but just a catted FP. Resonator isn't necessary with this setup as it's quiet when civil, and loud with authority when WOT. Best combo I've found after going through many catbacks.

I love my setup. Playfully loud when on the gas and super quiet when cruising (or a cop is behind you.) Get the specs in the video description or my build thread.
