Why I hate Dump Trucks
Close call on 405 today. I'm not sure if the BMW ate the rock or not first. There was a biker behind me that nearly got tagged with the rock after I dodged it.
So glad you see dump trucks all the time without their tarp and their locking pins.... So lazy... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doDY06olMzA"]i405 Rock from Dump Truck - YouTube[/ame] BTW... ignore the MPH... My dash cam has a firmware bug showing kmph with the mph stamp. |
Nice dodge! Got lucky, that was a fatty ass rock.

Nice dodge! Unfortunately @thehapaone @indesign and I didn't get so lucky.
@indesign got nicked in the windshield and that started to spider @thehapaone got niced on the a-piller which took a chunk out And I got rocks thrown at my carbon fiber front lip which took a couple chunks out and random nics on my hood and bumper [ame]http://youtu.be/YFVRRhIihfo[/ame] |

This is probably the thing that angers me most driving in the PNW - legally the beds on trucks like that need to be covered with some sort of tarp. I see maybe one covered for every twenty I see carrying all manner of gravel piled high above the border of the container, larger rocks like that one that nearly got you, etc., and it is never enforced - I've seen a cop pass right by a truck just like that one.
Aside from the clear property damage caused by that crap, can you imagine if a rock that size hit a motorcyclist, or a windshield? Man I'm getting all angered just typing about it; glad you were able to dodge it, and nice catch on the dash cam. I haven't had a stone thrown at my car, but about a year ago when I merged onto a freeway a truck in front of me was showering my car, and the entire highway with bloody chicken feathers (I have no idea why someone would carry something like this, and completely open to the wind to pick up (especially at freeway speeds), etc, which was a little traumatizing as I couldn't get away from them for awhile. The guy had to have seen what was going on in his mirrors, but he clearly didn't give a **** about it, and kept on speeding away with a red and white flurry trailing all over the freeway behind him. |
WA State: Takes unsecured loads seriously.
Big fines can be assessed by failure to secure load (or cover). In cases it is also a crime. If unsecured load causes damage to another vehicle and the owner of the other vehicle files a report then the driver (or company) of "at fault" vehicle can be fined and charged with a misdemeanor. If debris from unsecured load causes physical injury to another person, the driver of the vehicle "at fault" can be charged with a felony. Like if lumber falls off a truck and injures a motorcycle rider, or causes a car crash resulting in injury. The reason I know these things is because I had WSDOT and a friendly officer explain them to me while I was parked on the side of the road in 2011. |
Yet another reason to keep a dash cam..can at least have the possibility of holding a company liable if their crap damages your car.
|
the RCW also states it must be covered unless it's 6 inches under the boards. In the original file you can clearly see the load is level with the side boards and above the rear gate. I also have determined the company and the fleet #. Figured I would give them a friendly reminder email.
It was VERY VERY close to taking out the motorcyclist behind me, luckily he saw me swerving and followed suit. It was also good that he had a good amount of distance between himself and me. |

In hindsight, we should have busted a U and chased him down. The gopro didn't get the license plate and well.. police can just create a case number without clear evidence.
