Wrecked FR-S Crash Already - Not Mine

I was on my way to lunch with a coworker. There's a right turn I've taken a million times over the past 4 years that's very wide and has huge visibility, and I would sometimes get on the gas a little in my B16-swapped CRX through the turn. I never went over the speed limit, and I only did it if there was absolutely no one else around. Being a FWD, the front tires would break free a little and it would make the turn a bit more fun. Well, before leaving work I decided it would be a good idea to turn off the traction control and try something similar in the FR-S. That was my first mistake. I entered the turn at about 20mph, and halfway through it I got on the gas and I honestly can't remember exactly what happened after that. I remember being extremely surprised and then all of a sudden I was careening for a telephone pole, and then bam. I don't even think I hit the brakes. I must've hit the clutch pedal at some point because the car was still running when I stopped. Both airbags deployed. My passenger said he didn't even touch the airbag, I grazed it a little bit and it felt like I got hit in the face with a soft pillow. I must've been going 15-20mph at the impact. I couldn't believe how much the car just crumpled. I just looked at it and sat on the ground. I can't even describe to you the feeling of seeing it like that. I just wanted to cry.

I'm 24 years old, been driving since 16, and this is my first accident/ticket. I was ticketed for "failure to maintain reasonable control", which honestly was extremely generous given the circumstances. I feel like the world's biggest idiot. I feel like I've shamed myself and done a huge disservice to the community. Sorry just doesn't say enough. I swore I wouldn't be one of those guys everyone was saying would do something stupid and wreck the car and drive up the insurance rates. Now I'm not only that guy, but it seems I'm the _first_ guy. Not exactly the best way to make an impression. I want you guys to know that I truly feel awful about the whole thing. I am truly sorry for letting my fellow FR-S owners down, and through making a complete ass out of myself, I feel I've learned a valuable lesson, albeit a hard one. I know some of you (a lot of you) will hate me, call me an idiot, tell me I shouldn't have even tried anything like that on a public road, etc. And I agree with you 100%. I made a stupid, stupid, irresponsible choice, and now I'm paying for it. I don't think any of you can hate me more than I hate myself.

I hope I can stand as an example of what can happen even at relatively low speeds when you're being stupid. Please for the love of god don't be me. Drive safe, keep traction control on on public roads, and don't try to be Ken Block. Unless you are Ken Block, in which case, keep being awesome.

I wonder if this was the result of a failed drift?

#87 06-15-2012 04:02 PM

O lawd, looks fixable tho

Talk about break in period

Turbowned 06-15-2012 04:02 PM

Wow, that really sucks man. I'll retract my previous statement. I knew this would happen eventually but I honestly feel a little bad given you were going so slow. You'll know better next time! It happened to me in my MR2 Turbo once; I thought I'd give it a little extra throttle coming around a tight turn. The back end swung out and I couldn't regain control fast enough; managed to slide and just lightly bump the base of a tree, cracking my front spoiler. I'd been driving RWD all my life and several mid-engine cars, so I shocked myself when it happened. Maybe it's best to leave TC and ESC on until you get to the track/auto-x course from now on.

Airbag deployed, core support damage, possible suspension damage... That's probably $10k in damage.

Cudgel 06-15-2012 04:42 PM

So soon and so sad but this was bound to happen.

Snoopyalien24 06-15-2012 04:47 PM

I hope they were okay. Looks like it hit a pole, but anyways, quick! Someone snatch the tails and try to bake them open!

ZetaVI 06-15-2012 04:50 PM

So sad. So so soon.

mr2lor 06-15-2012 04:58 PM

and the rise of insurance rates on fr-s...

Want.FR-S 06-15-2012 05:05 PM

Sad, even the whiteout (supposed to be the lowest accident color in Japan) cannot escape this fate....

Jayp 06-15-2012 05:15 PM

My eyes! They hurt!!

SVTSHC 06-15-2012 05:30 PM

SnapOv3st3r 06-15-2012 05:39 PM

Poor out a little liquor for that FR-S.

Dave-ROR 06-15-2012 06:03 PM

I was fully expecting to see the back end of one wrapped around a post, not the front.

bestwheelbase 06-15-2012 06:58 PM

It is a sad day. :(

kwood9000 06-15-2012 07:02 PM

Really sucks...

IN THE FACE

Well. At least if I do any damage to mine I won't be that guy.

Soooo, whose got the pitchforks and torches?

yayforaddison 06-15-2012 07:04 PM

Oh my sweet baby Jesus! That didn't take long!

TuxedoCartman 06-15-2012 07:06 PM

*ting ting, ting ting*

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of all of our insurance rates going up, as underwriters begin to figure out just what kind of car this is.

What does everyone think? My money is on single-vehicle accident, with a... hmm, light pole? Yeah, I'm going to say a parking lot light pole.

Mr.Jay 06-15-2012 07:10 PM

If this is anyone here I'll buy your taillights :bellyroll:

Sad to see tho

I wasn't going to post these pics out of respect for the cars owner (he's a friend of mine), but since they're here already I might as well post the original that I got from the guy who took them. I would like to point out that the passenger side airbag broke the windshield. Is that normal?

civicdrivr 06-15-2012 07:33 PM

Obligatory "that'll buff out".

Pass side airbags tend to crack the windsheild in most cars, its due to the positioning of the airbag on the dash.

Youre friends with the owner? Sooooo......what happened?

jflBRZ 06-15-2012 07:38 PM

since it's on the front, let me guess... too much hooning around?:confused0068:

jimmillion 06-15-2012 07:40 PM

@Brett, sorry to hear man, no one was hurt right?

_hollywood 06-15-2012 07:41 PM

there will be more by the end of summer.....

Calidrifter 06-15-2012 07:45 PM

Would be nice to know how it happened.

Sorry for the loss.

FRSPirate 06-15-2012 07:48 PM

I curbed my car last week, chunked paint off my bumper and rashed the pass side wheel but it wasn't my fault. Some dumb c*nt in an SUV decided that 2 left turn lanes was one too many and started merging into me as we made our left turns. Either risk structural damage by letting her hit my car and she'd possibly just run over my whole front end or curb the car...so i curbed the car. Literally nothing i could have done other than that. I was already on the brakes laying on the horn and she just kept on coming like if i was in her lane. I forced that stupid c*nt bag to pull over and give me her info but since she didnt make car to car contact so i might be S.O.L. I didnt want her to hit my car either because if they didnt total the car, it would have never driven the same plus an accident record. I called the cops and she took off after giving me the least amount of info possible. Good thing i at least got her policy number and phone number (which was disconnected and changed). The police officer that showed up tried to call her and she basically told him that i was lying and i came from the opposite direction and turned into her. Then she told him that she was busy, going to sleep and not to call her until next week. I might have to tune my baseball swing on her cars...hoping for her sake she parks in her garage.

Hanakuso 06-15-2012 07:50 PM

Looks more like the hood cracked the front glass then the airbag

Fish 06-15-2012 08:00 PM

Wow... Just wow....

So what happened? Is he ok? How long did he have the car prior to the accident?.
