New FRS Break In
I just bought my 2015 FRS and have done some reads on proper break in procedures and have searched numerous Forums on break in procedures. So far I have tallied 700 miles on my FRS and have not revd passed 4k rpms. Everyone has talked about manufacturers specs on waiting till 1000 miles till revving pass 4k rpms.
I was just curious on this read on Mototune USA. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Any thoughts? inputs? |
At 1000 miles, change the oil and filter and have at it! But definitely change the oil first.
|
I'd wait until 5k miles for an oil change ... for Sure replace the LSD oils - that stuff gets gnarly
I personally WOT'd mine after a good warm up ... so far she's doing well in terms of engine :) |
I drove my car exactly how I would normally drive it from 6 miles on. A few redline runs here and there, and mostly regular driving. I would be shocked to learn without a doubt this is harmful to the engine vs babying it for 1000 miles. Just let everything warm up before going over 3k and drive it with common sense. I've never had any car give me mechanical issues, and I've driven them all that way.
|
I personally think it's more about changing up the loads on your engine rather than keep it under a certain RPM. obviously you don't want to drive your car at 3k RPM everywhere you go for the first 1000 miles. that's one of the reasons why they tell you not to use cruise control. it's so that your engine can see varying loads and the pistons won't form to one specific RPM set
|
Did you read the included manual? Not to be rude, but it clearly lays out proper break-in procedure in the manual. It literally says keep it under 4k for the first 1000 miles, avoiding constant speeds for prolonged periods. Also, avoid the use of cruise control and high revving unless an emergency.
|
Yes i have read the manual. But i was just curious about anyone's take on the write up on the link i posted. i have logged 800miles so far and have kept her under 4k rpms. i appreciate all the comments :)

While there is some plausibility to the idea of the "run it hard" motor break in, I think the real question is if you want to risk possibly getting denied on warranty...
A large manufacturer certainly isn't going to recommend a break-in procedure that's detrimental to your motor, unless they like dealing with class-actions. I'd say the safe bet is to simply follow manufacturer (not dealer) recommendations. That is unless you're planning to run your car competitively in a racing series - in which case it's not likely you'd be on here asking about this. |
I'm sure if you happen to break the 4k rpm max a few times you won't be denied warranty. If they read the logger and it was over 4k repeatedly then I would say the engine warranty would be invalidated.

I think that's what the OP was talking about: running the motor really hard instead of using the manufacturer suggested break in method. Which also includes a provision to rev over 4k "in case of emergency". Unless you live an incredibly exciting Jack Bauer life, this would only be a handful of times. |

Why so soon? The dealer claims that the factory oil is the best and longer lasting engine oil. That one is supposed to be left in the engine for the 1st 6000 miles. After that I change it every 3000 miles. BTW I'm no expert, that is why I'm asking. :) |

They also look at a used oil analysis and see 36 parts per million of aluminum from the factory fill uoa and think, "OMG! MY ENJUN'S GONNA ASSPLODE FROM ALL OF THE FACTORY METALZ"! They also probably don't think that the additional ZDDP, and molybdenum (from the factory fill Idemitsu oil and the assembly lube) are beneficial, or they listen to people on the internet that believe that the factory fill oil is the same as the dealer service fill oil. It's not. The oil also appears sparkly from the assembly lube and they're thinking that they are removing harmful "metal chunks". Some people are also probably misguided by information from their dealers, but Toyota nor Subaru recommends any oil change at less than 3,000 mile intervals. That's my 45 cents! |
There isn't any issue to rev. your engine hard, but stay with the manual considerations. It is not only about engine break-in ...
|
again thank you everyone for your inputs. I have just over 900miles so I'm almost there. I didn't realize there was already a thread on this but reading through that whole thread gave me a headache from all the non informative posts that was going on midway through lol. so far I am following the recommended 1000mile break in period. I really was just curious about that motoman write up. and after talking to a Toyota mechanic he did say that my first oil change and tune up comes up at 7500 miles. which I do believe is a little long for my first oil change.
