California surrendering plates
I would like to get a personalized plate for my Fr-s, but I don't want to pay for two personalized plates because I have one already on my 04 xb. Is there any way to surrender without giving both back legally? I would like to keep one to hang up. I had read online that I have to file a police report if one is lost, stolen, or destroyed.

When I registered a car as salvage, they just gave me the new plates and told me to get rid of the old ones. Didn't need to hand it to them. Every DMV is different though, some are lax and some aren't

Just give them one. Plates get damaged all the time (front end collision.) "Never got it back from the bodyshop."

I've gotten new plates before n was never asked about the old ones.

Well they took them. I left them in my car acting like I didn't have them just in case. They said they need both to give me new plates. Oh well.

Report them as stolen?
