I drive fast because the car feel "slow"

How often you find yourself going over the limit and not even realize it? Not because you're intentionally breaking the laws. Not because you're late to a hot date with that new chick. Not because you're rushing to be on time for that promising job interview. Definitely not because you're doing a Fast and Furious with that guy in the Civic Si.

Is this typical with any other lightweight sports car? I switch between my daily beater V6 Accord and the FR-S. The Accord is a boat and feels fast when you pass the legal speed. The FR-S just feel "slow", even at the same speed.

Please, don't hang me if this has been discussed before or hard to understand.

I have no issue with understanding how fast I am going in the FRS.
However... now when I drive the wife's RVR I can find myself 20 or even 30 MPH over the limit with out even knowing. It is high and quiet so the speed perception is grossly skewed for me now.
Good thing it has a high pitched, screeching alarm in the passenger seat that goes off whenever I go too fast!

Sticky tires, stiffer springs and very little sound dampening makes for great road communication, so it's easy to feel what's happening...I think I get where you are coming from

Well I'm the opposite...I always notice how fast I'm going in the BRZ. When I drive my lady's civic or parents jetta I can go faster without realizing

Do you also have a screeching alarm in the passenger seat when you do?

brandonblt2 04-30-2015 12:24 PM

the sense of speed is usually higher for me when I seat my car going 60 mph feels fast compared to sitting in my friends lifted truck 60 mph feels like 40 mph

DuMa 04-30-2015 12:25 PM

I think you have it opposite, OP. the car feels fast at 40-50mph because you are experiencing more feedback from the road and wind noises.

Same thing here. In my former RSX and current BRZ, I know "exactly" how fast I'm going by all the feedback compared to the Camry we're borrowing from the wife's folks. Besides being gutless, 30mph feels like 60mph, and the brakes have 2 settings: put you through the windshield or anemic. I absolutely hate the car.

Not yet...We're both 22. When she hits 30 then the alarm will turn on I think :bonk:

First time I drove a Mosler MT900, I took the off ramp from I-95, and as I was mergign onto the surface street I realized I was still doing...ah, more than the limit, and other cars on were, LOL. Lack of body roll, sticky tires, etc., changes how "fast" feels. The BRZ is similar in that regard, but I pay more attention now.

It could be just me. I commute about 20 miles daily through residential (25-45mph), highways (60-80mph) and winding country roads (55-65mph). With the Accord, I can "feel" the excessive speed because it's got "resistance", basically that feeling that you're going too fast. The FR-S just go where ever you point it and how ever you want it, no resistance.

Actually I don't think it is a timed event so much as activated by procreation. The sensitivity setting seems to get lower as time goes by though.

To me it sounds like you're talking about taking turns and curves.. That is true.

Today though I almost shat my pants. Went on a two-lane ramp on the outside lane going 70 and almost side swiped the bounce barrier...I need stickier tires lol
