NJ state paying for damage?

does anyone have any experience with getting NJ to pay for damage done to your car, either Body or wheel/rims suspension,

recently i was driving at night and hit a small pole that was laying in the road way, that must have been left over from a recent construction site,

i filed a police report with the town i was in, the officer was telling me if the damage exceeds $500 that the state will step in a pay for the damage,

went to a local friends body shop and he filled out an Honest Quote and it ended up being $930

yea i know, i should have been paying more attention, i honestly did not see this thing in the road, was about 2 ft long, was painted black.

just want to see what peoples experiences were with a situation similar to this
how long did it take? were they fighting with you about it? did they pay full? pay partial? not doing anything at all?

Thanks!

im waiting a couple days for them to process the police report before going there with my quote from the body shop

from people ive talked to already was mainly for rims/tires from potholes
some people had great success, other people not so much

photo makes it look tiny, hard to photograph it

the door isnt the worst part of it

the scratch/dent on the rear panel before the wheel is the worse part

You had no damage to your wheels, thats weird. Good luck getting the state to pay for it just dont expect it to be quick. I work for the state and know just how long it takes for them make decisions

yep, zero damage to wheels

im expected it to take some time, i might just bight the bullet and just go straight through insurance, $500 loss, but it will get done in a proper time line

i have no patience
