Shift lock stuck after short
Hey so here's my problem hopefully somebody knows what's going on here.
My brother was hooking up jumper cables between my car and his but he accidentally put the ground and positive wires on his battery backwards which caused a lot of sparks and crippled my car. At this point my car wouldn't start. After some investigation I noticed the 140amp fuse on the positive battery terminal was blown so I got the dealer to order me a new one, replaced it, and now the car starts fine. After this I noticed my turn signals and my head unit/nav weren't working, and I could not shift the car out of park (It's an automatic btw). So I went through all of the fuses under the hood and in the foot well and found two blown fuses under the hood (15A HAZ & 20A DOME). Replaced them and my turn signals and head unit came back. But the shift lock is still preventing me from shifting normally(can only shift using the manual override button). I read that usually the shift lock mechanism activates when your brake lights are out but I checked them and they are working fine. Any ideas why my shift lock is stuck? Any other fuses you would recommend I replace even though they don't appear to be blown? Thanks for the help |
No warning lights on dash?
|
Does the car turn on? Are you pressing the brake pedal all the way down when shifting out of gear?
|
Yes the car turns on, no lights on the dash, and yes I'm pressing the the brake pedal all the way in.
I just read on another forum about another car to manually take it out of park (with the manual override button) into neutral AND THEN start up the car and it may reset it. When I was using the button to shift it out of park I already had the car running. Don't know if that's why it's still stuck. |
Did you try disconnecting the battery? The ECU may be messed up and need a reset (or worse case just be messed up)
|
I disconnected the battery when I replaced the positive terminal head which had the blown 140a fuse on it but I certainly could do it again and see what happens, thanks for the suggestion

Update: Tried disconnecting the battery again and starting the car from neutral, neither fixed the shift lock. Took the car for a drive and everything is functioning, nothing out of the ordinary. Just have to shift out of and into park with a screwdriver haha :(
Going to make an appointment to bring it up to the dealer and have it looked at unless you guys have any other ideas? |
@Nickdogg hey you asked me about this problem but it won't let me send you a pm for some reason so i'll just answer here.
I ended up bringing the car to a subaru dealer and they replaced the shift lock solenoid which was fried, then everything worked like normal. Later on that year I replaced the battery all together since it was having a hard time holding a charge in the cold, not sure if that was caused by the short or just a normal issue with the brz battery. Good luck with your issue, hope this information was helpful! |
