I had a Race-Technology DL-1 that I liked very much many years ago... sold it whenever I was temporarily unemployed for about a year. I wish I would have kept it because I bought it for hundreds less than they normally went for (which was why I jumped on it in the first place...).

Another entry level option is Harry's lap timer. It's an iPhone based app that sells for about $20. It uses the phone's gps to calculate speed, location, accel, etc. You can buy an external gps for more accuracy. It's good for comparing two drivers on the fly. It's not a traqmate but it does an okay job for being $1000 cheaper.
