Making an axel back sound louder. Possible?
Hey guys. Recently I bought a used Greddy SP Elite Axelback from someone local who upgraded to a perrin full catback. (Im starting to understand why he upgraded)
The thing is, I LOVE the way it sounds. Its just not loud enough. Now the reason I post this is because the rest of my exhaust is stock. And I didnt know if upgrading the headers, upper pipe, mid pipe (bearing in mind mid pipe would have to be custom made due to lack of mid pipes fitting this axelback) etc. If any of these would help make this axleback sound louder? Couple of notes: The Greddy Axelback is maybe 25-30% louder than stock at 1.5.2.5k rpm. Above 2.5k I cant notice a difference over stock. Id like to see if upgrading any of the other exhaust components would increase the loudness by 40-50% throughout the entire rpm range, not just low. Other recommendations are welcome. Thanks. |
upgrade the front pipe/overpipe. That's what I plan to do on mine. Should make the exhaust a bit louder.

Yeah if you're just looking for a modest increase in sound throughout just upgraded your front pipe to a non catted version

u can try a muffler delete. Go to a muffler shop and have them delete resonators?
|
Go with uel headers with your greedy axleback will sound deep and rumbly
And fuck your neighboors if they start to complain |
font pipe will definitely make a noticeable increase in sound if it's non catted
|
new header. catless + tune
|
Will it be obnoxiously loud? I don't care what neighbors think. I just don't want to annoy myself or have to raise my voice any louder to talk to a passenger in the car with me than I do now.

If it is truly axel back then you still have the mid pipe resonator. take it off and go to a muffler shop and have them make a replacement. that way you can go back to stock if you do not like the drone. Option "B" would be to cut the resonator out and replace with a short piece of strait pipe.
Both are cheep and easy. I went with Flowmaster (not recommended). I put the resonator back in to help with the drone. |
I also have the greddy sp elite axle back but matched with a borla uel header. Cold start is a bit loud but once you do to idle it sounds great

Awesome. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions thus far.
I did some more research and I think I'm going to go ahead with this purchase/install. Motiv Concepts Overpipe Motiv Concepts Test Pipe (Front pipe) FT86 Catted UEL Header (I think I remember reading this was better than Borla's UEL. Is that true?) I'm going to leave the stock mid pipe since other forums on here suggest that upgrading the stock mid pipe wont really add much of anything at all. Also, do I HAVE to replace all of the relevant gaskets? Ive only got 14k miles on the car. Not sure if its truly necessary or not. And there is no reason why any of these would have any issues fitment wise on an AT? Thanks. |

if you want the best bang for buck just go catless header and tune and leave the rest stock, you will get the sound increase you want and more power, easiest cheapest route is likely openflash header and openflash tablet\tune combo will be about 1000 all up. or another canned tune and header if you dont get a tune you will likely get cel code even with catted aftermarket header. quite a few guys on ft86 speedfactory catted heade get cel code yes you need to use new gaskets |

If you get a header, you will have to tune it to remove the CEL and get actual performance out of it. OP/FP will do little to nothing as far as performance. Get a UEL header and tune it with open flash |
I read over steves guide as recommended. It was very informative so thAnks for that.
It now seems like you would just advise to get a catless header plus tune over catted header, op, and catless front pipe. However, I feel like a catless header will be much much louder than if I did a catted UEL one combined with a catless front pipe. Seeing as how I want some increase in noise, not bleeding ears loud, what do you think? Keep in mind that I'm using the greddy axel back with way as that's the whole point to this vs just buying a new cat back. |
@geruta
I have the same exact set up as previously mentioned: Tomei UEL Header with stock exhaust except for an aftermarket axle back that's a Greddy SP Elite Clone. In my honest opinion, it's a little too quiet for me. There's enough burble and growl upon acceleration, but not enough in cabin noise. Most of the noise from this set up is behind the car, which is a great thing for the more mature crowd. However, I think with this set up, mated with an aftermarket over pipe and resonated front pipe, it'd give it a slightly more volume that it needs. As for myself, I'd rather not spend more money than required for my desired sound decibels, so I opted for a muffled track pipe for the extra burble. Here's a sound clip of my set up. You're welcome. :bonk: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoJ1UzHPHGY"]Subaru BRZ Top Pro 1 Speed Axle Back Revs - YouTube[/ame] |
