Chip noise under FRS hood? may be this

Update: a member suggested to use fuel with no ethanol at all and the noise may be gone. Can someone confirm this?

I hit a big bump and developed the infamous cricket noise ever since.

Looking at this video, the noise is pretty much the same, so I assume it's the same problem with the water pump?

I don't think I'd take advice on anything from that dude. OP, you know that car in the vid is not an FR-S, correct? ETA: OP, if your car sounds like the one in that video, you should probably head to the dealer, as your car is busted.

Yep Zhan you are now one of the very exclusive Cricket Club.
They will come and they will go and there are a billion ways people say they get rid of them that sometimes work for some people but more often don't.
Don't bother getting the pump changed since they will (or will not) come back. The good news is that they go away in the cold so you get peace and quiet for about 6 months.

Mine just started. I thought it'd be really bad and annoying from what I'd heard. It's barely noticeable. You won't even notice it if you aren't looking for it.

How is possible to purchase an FR-S in 2015 without already hearing about this?

NWFRS 04-14-2015 11:33 PM

WTF.

Are we all watching the same video?

I couldn't get through the first thirty seconds.

Who8myrice 04-14-2015 11:43 PM

I just had to watch the whole thing ...... to see how bad it would get ..... :eyebulge:

OP, just in case ...... HPFP stands for High Pressure Fuel Pump. A lot of them make that sound a lot of the time. They aren't broke ..... that's just how they sound.

It can be worse, otherwise make your exhaust louder (uel header and catback of your preference)
then you will hear the distinctive boxer rumble of subaru engine.

kilmer has a ton of videos, in his earlier car vids he would always grunt "errgh" at each turn of the wrench, hilarious!

ToySub1946 04-15-2015 03:49 AM

The noise goes away if you turn off the engine...guaranteed !

Personal note: I hit some bumps yesterday, driving a dry dirt road with some big rocks, uphill, with all the nannies turned off, revving the shit out of the engine. The rear end slid sideways couple of times, I counter steered to correct it. Jeez, what a total riot it was. Crickets, who cares ? Car rarely sits at idle anyway. This car is designed to have the crap beat out of it...if you ain't enjoying that, no fun will be had.
