2015 Hypermeet at Tsukuba - 5 Lap Battle

Here is in-car video from our AVO turbocharged BRZ, driven by Ross Wilson of AVO Japan, from the 5 Lap Battle at Tsukuba Circuit this last weekend. He won easily over the competition, notably the HKS supercharged car that placed 2nd.

The car is running a stock block, and making about 420whp on race gas.
Main parts:
AVO stage 4 turbocharger kit (larger billet turbo, larger intercooler)
Full 3" AVO exhaust
AVO upgraded injectors and fuel pump assembly
AVO front lip spoiler and rear wing
Custom valved coilovers
AVO front/rear LCA bushings, transmission mount bushing, rear diff bushings.

Power is definitely not an issue, we actually broke one of the rear halfshafts on Saturday during practice. Luckily that is easy to replace!

close race. keep up the good work!

That looked like a ton of fun, battling it out with other 86's on the track. Congrats on the win!

Beautiful track line! Throttle inputs, track outs and hit nearly every rumble strip. Makes me wish I had a track session this month!!

420 who is impressive for stock block. What kind of cooling are you running? Oil cooler, radiator? Stock thermostat? Has heating been a problem during the build?

Here is the final results:

It's worth noting that every other driver was a professional race driver - Tarzan Yamada came in 3rd on there.

It is running the ducted AVO oil cooler and our upgraded radiator. The thermostat is stock.

While the setup of the AVO kit has much less impact on heat compared to other kits, even from stock the car will run hot when being tracked heavily as our has been.

Some key points to keeping it cool -

1) We kept all the bumper ducting at the sides of the radiator to make sure all the air flows directly to the radiator. We've even sealed it up a bit more to ensure that, and we made sure the radiator edges were sealed off as well.

2) When we first fit the front lip spoiler for the track, our temperatures dropped even further. For this race it was pushed out more, and temperatures went down again. So the lip spoiler is very important for pushing the air up and through the bumper, increasing the cooling effect.

3) Fitting the oil cooler and the upgraded radiator both helped as well. Even on a stock car, they drop the temperatures quite a bit when doing extended runs at the track.

Nice to hear! I know it's not avo but after logging temps from my first 2 hpde events I went with mishimoto oil cooler, koyo radiator Perrin hoses and added water wetter to the Subaru blue mix. At track my water temp doesn't hit above 195 and I have an apt splitter so it's definitly getting airflow.
I'm curious about this extra sealing you did. Any pics?

Great race! What tires and sizes are you running? What about brakes?

airjonny 04-15-2015 06:57 PM

Is this going to be aired on Hot Version or Best Motoring?

AVOturboworld 04-16-2015 12:40 AM

I'll check into who is doing the video.

RE71 Bridgestone 245/40/18 on a front and rear 8.5 inch wheel. We had to run street tires for the class we were in.
