With an insurance quote this high, is it even worth owning a twin?

I've set my goal to purchase an fr-s by July and I just got around to my insurance to get a quote.

I had room in my budget for twice of what I pay on insurance now, but today I got a full coverage quote for a whopping $250 a month. A bit of a blow considering I was willing to pay up to $450 a month on the car loan itself(trying to pay down in 3-4 years). Just seeing an insurance payment of nearly half (or even more) of the loan itself just rubs me the wrong way. The way I look at it I'll basically be paying $31,000 for everything in the long run with insurance included by the time it is paid off, not to mention insurance payments thereafter.

Is $250/month even in the ballpark of what most brz/fr-s owners pay on insurance?
Is there a general round figure for how much insurance should cost vs. the cost of the car?

Thanks

I pay roughly $100/month for my frs. 26y/o male with a clean record. Did you see if there are any discounts you can use?

God I love these "what is your insurance rates" threads!
Unless you live within about a block, have exactly the same training/experience, are the same age and have the same record insurance rates can vary by $1,000s a year.
Just shop around for the best rate you can get and don't worry about what others are paying because you may never be able to get that rate!

OP, there's no magic number or ratio as to how much insurance should cost in relation to the car. There are way too many factors to take into account and the only factor you should be considering is whether or not you can swing the payment. If you're balking at $250 a month, the answer is probably "no" for now.

The only way your insurance quote is close to what someone else would have, is if the following conditions are all identical:

age
Zip code
driving history
credit score/history
how many cars you own
house ownership
coverage limits
deductible
and anything else the insurance company may see as a risk factor in owning a car.

No I havent thought about discounts but I will definitely shop around. I'm 24 now but my tickets is probably what dictates the price. Nothing wreckless but a lot of companies I went to wouldn't even cover me with 3 of them.

It's a car geared towards the younger crew and it's been out long enough to start having the accident statistics hike the rates up. The younger guys in these cars are going to being paying the most. I'm 30 and have a second car, no accidents or tickets and a second policy for renters insurance so I have a few discounts helping me out. I have 50/100/50 coverage with uninsured motorist, road side assistance with 250 collision and 100 comprehensive deductible and pay $110 a month for my 2015 FR-S.

Welcome to the world of responsibility. If your budget doesn't make ends meet keep living frugally (I mean keep driving the old Civic) until the tickets fall off your record and your insurance rates drop, last I heard it was 3 years but varies based on location. Besides, in the meantime you can save up

And I can't think of a single ticket that isn't wreckless, even if they're parking tickets or 2 mph that still screams irresponsibility from a repeat offender.

One, ok. Three is someone not taking notice and insurance companies are going to assess risk blindly from statistics, you will not argue yourself to a lower rate, especially not around here.

I'm a 24 year old male, high mileage driver, similar coverage ($500 deductible), high traffic area, I pay <$90/month including my second non-primary car.

I even totaled a car when I was 17 but that's fallen off the record.
:bonk:
Too many variables to make such generalizations.

450/month holy F0ck!!! yeah dont do that.

I was 27 when i got the GTR and it was 130/month, geico even quoted me at 170/mo for the new viper.

You could try asking ur parents to put the car under them, with you as a secondary driver, and just pay them. May help cut the rate down.

U are paying more then double of me 😱

That's about what I paid when I first got my frs when I was just almost 19... A really hard blow indeed. Check around and see if you can get a better quote. I got it down to 220 eventually searching around. Also the pricing depends a lot on the individual and location. I lived on a pretty busy suburban place in LA plus my age didn't help at all either.

He's asking your opinion, not looking for a ratio. Either give a nice opinion or don't post. Thanks!
