Team Continental Track Day

Just to let anyone who is interested know, Team Continental has a race weekend May 22-24. Friday the 22nd is driver training/HPDE/test &tune. Race days on Saturday and Sunday. If you join TC ($35) entry fee is $185 vs $225, savings $5. I know that's not much, but if you do the Oct 3 event it's $50 savings. Love to see a bunch of 86's out there. ORP is as good as it gets!

paiceyfan 04-13-2015 05:01 PM

I am considering it. I want to do two track days with a $1000 budget and late May looks good as my first one right now. I am a rookie, so lots to learn about this stuff...need a helmet too...

rice_classic 04-13-2015 09:37 PM

I will be there for all three days. The race schedule for Sat/Sun is a Qual/Race, Qual/Race format with no practice sessions and since I've never run CounterClockwise there it'll be important to get some time in before I have to take a green flag.

I look forward to seeing some 86s out there on Friday! Y'all can poke fun at my orange, plasti-dipped, fwd, derp-wagon. :)

I don't think the showers/bathrooms will be ready by this even but this link here says they begin construction this spring (woohoo!):

@paiceyfan I would really encourage you to go through the TC drivers school. It is one of the best club level schools around. What makes it unique is that you have classroom sessions between driving sessions. Most schools make you sit through 3 hours of classroom instruction a day or two before the event so when you get on the track you may have difficulty remembering/applying the classroom material. Also TC's focus has always been racing, so most of their instructors are or have been racing drivers. It's a great program, I went through it 2 years ago, and now I'm great!

@rice classic I'll look forward to meeting you. By the way counter clockwise is the really fun way around ORP.

rice_classic 04-14-2015 12:37 PM

Just an FYI:

There's a lapping day this Friday @ The Ridge with Turn2 Lapping, if you're wanting to get out on track right away but registration ends tomorrow. It looks like there's 1 FRS and 1 BRZ registered and the weather looks great.
https://www.motorsportreg.com/events...1#.VS0yUZORzX4

Another note on the TC day:
TC's sister club for the Seattle area (IRDC) had their driver school this Saturday @ The Ridge already filled up, which is nice because last year I don't think we filled all the spots for the driver's school so it's very cool to see the increase demand for this. With that being said there's a chance the TC day @ ORP will fill up fast too so if you're considering it you should go register right away.

Decay107 04-14-2015 01:31 PM

And just so everyone knows, buying the $10 lunch is well worth it at ORP. Last time I went it was grilled pineapple, chicken, and vegetables, with cheesecake for dessert

The whole deal looks good...not too pricey (that's pricey, not ricey :) )...ORP, which I would prefer based on reviews and they seem like a respected outfit. Just need to set up a hotel room somewhere, too, as it is nearly four hours drive from home. They supply helmets, too, don't they? Where's the nearest gas station for standard Premium?

Cheers!

There are 3 motels at Biggs Junction, about 30 miles from the track. I've stayed at Three Rivers Inn a couple of times, clean well maintained very reasonable pricing. Two bed & breakfasts' in Wasco, 20 miles from the track. The Tall Winds motel in Moro, about 10 miles away, but fills quickly. Otherwise The Dalles which puts you 50 miles out.

The track generally opens at 7 AM with registration at 7:30. You'll have to have your car tech'd which will be open at the same time as registration. A drivers meeting will take place about 8:30, and the first group is generally on the track at 9:00. If you decide to do it you'll receive a schedule via email.

I'm not sure about the helmets, but my brother is the Asst. Driving Master. If you contact him at jim.larfield@gmail.com I'm sure he will get you set up.

The nearest gas to the track is at Biggs Junction. The track does have 92 octane non-ethanol available. It's a bit spendy at $5.50 a gallon, but you won't have to bring fuel if you don't want to.

jblmr2 05-02-2015 01:55 PM

Just a bump to remind everybody this is coming up in less than 3 weeks. Long term forecast looks great, temps in the 70's!

sirbobbinhood 05-03-2015 08:54 PM

I just got signed up, it'll be my first time on a track so I'm excited.

That's great you'll have a good time. See you there. By the way I noticed you signed up for group 2. If this will be your first time on track I would suggest you change your registration to group 1. That way you'll get an instructor, something I would highly recommend for a first timer and on this track.

Thanks for the heads up, I just redid the registration but it's still putting me in group 2. The first time I put in Group 1 and this time I put in NA for group. Is there someone I can email to let them know so I can make sure I'm in the right class?

Actually, I talked to my brother who is one of the honchos for this event. He told me they will move you to group 1, so you don't need to worry about it.

sittinSideways 05-04-2015 05:22 PM

This looks fantastic! I've been wanting to get on the track for a while, and ORP looks like a very safe track (no ditches to go into or barriers to hit). Looking forward to this so much, only problem is it's on a school weekend... Might still sign up though

I'm a complete beginner. I've done drifting at PARC and Evergreen Speedway but never did grip racing. Here's my understanding:

- You gotta pay $220 for the HPDE driving school on Friday.
- Then, after having completed that driving school, I pay another $380 for Novice 2-day or $200 for a Novice 1 day

Or am I wrong, and it's $220 for the 22nd to 24th, comprehensive?

Assuming that sounds good, here's my question: how much seat time do I get in the driving school?

How much seat time do I get during the Novice 1-day? And is it competitive, like I'm racing against others on the track, or is it just a bunch of novices on the track doing their own thing?

EDIT: looks like 20 minutes of seat time for qualifying and 1 hour of seat time for competitive racing on Sat/Sun?

I believe everyone who will be attending will just be doing the HPDE. Which will be about 2 hours of track time.

If you wish to take part in the race, you should become familiar with this
http://www.icscc.com/references/comp_regs_2015.pdf

This may be presumptuous of me, but I doubt your car would meet the safety regulations for competitive wheel to wheel racing. Do you have...

Full roll cage?
Fire proof suit?
Kill switch?
Fire suppression system?
Willingness to accept the rubbing is racing?

Sweet, thanks for the help.

I have a willingness to accept that rubbing is racing, but that's all I have from that list :3

No problem!

As far as I know there isn't anyone in the PNW who has a 100% dedicated 86 race-car yet, but I'm sure once used prices get down to about the $10K range we'll see quite a few. :party0030:

$220 is for HPDE only. Race on Saturday and Sunday require an additional fee, and you must have a racing license. As a beginner you should register in group 1. TC generally runs 5 20min sessions for each group. Believe me you will be wasted when you're finished. HPDE is not competitive. Passing is only allowed in designated places on the track and only when the car being passed has given you a point by. It you haven't done this before you will on overload all day long. It require intense focus but is incredibly fun. Come out and play with us!

sittinSideways 05-04-2015 11:41 PM

Cool, I'll sign up for HPDE, but the racing on Sat is most likely outta the question for now. Looking forward to meeting you guys!

rice_classic 05-05-2015 01:52 PM

For @sittinSideways

The ICSCC has a comprehensive novice program where candidates do the driver's school first and if the instructor approves them for the novice program they get their novice license and can race in novice races. After a minimum of 3 novice races, passing their exam and completing a little volunteer work (flaggin, pre-grid etc) they then upgrade their license and race with side by side with the fast guys. This novice system makes everyone safer on track and it creates better, faster, safer racers overall.

So if racing is something you want to pursue that may help.

Racing doesn't have to be expensive either. There's some good info in here about costs and they're not too bad:
Cost of racing thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49719

ORP is only a few weeks away and I'm pumped. I've never run it CCW before so I've been watching a lot of youtube video lately:

sittinSideways 05-05-2015 07:44 PM

Thanks for the information! ORP looks like a great, safe track. I'm pretty pumped myself :)

paiceyfan 05-08-2015 04:53 PM

OK, I am going for it. I will have to set up a hotel room nearby and head out on Thursday afternoon.

I wish I could be sure of the helmet, though, I don't want to get out there and find they are not available:(

Looking forward to meeting like-minded fellows... :D

Glad to hear you're going to give it a try. Don't worry about the helmet, my brother says they have over a dozen available. If worse comes to worse you can use mine since we are not in the same group. It's going to be a very fun day!

Anyone have any advice on insurance...it looks like Lockton will not cover the event and Progressive certainly will not. What do you guys use?

I'd call Lockton directly and see what they have to say. Personally, I don't buy insurance for HPDEs and ORP is a pretty safe track without a lot of hard surfaces to hit (and thank god for that, I've been spit off twice), but you should do whatever makes you feel most comfortable for your situation.

As @Decay107 says, ORP is a very safe track. lots of runoff area if you do go off. If you feel more comfortable, you can buy it off of the MotorsportReg site. Here's the link: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.c...B42C2D7200FFF3

paiceyfan 05-10-2015 02:31 PM

It's not just my driving and the track, but car-to-car collisions, too. This is my daily driver and I have to ensure that it is covered. Lockton do not list Team Continental as a club that it will insure and state that the event organizer has to contact them and meet their guidelines.

I have an email in to them and will let you know what happens.

Cheers!

Car to car collisions are nonexistent. Passing is only allowed in designated areas of the track and only when the driver being passed points the faster car by. It's not racing. The link I gave you will allow you to buy insurance.

I agree with @jblmr2 here, never seen a car v. car collision, only car v. track. If at any point you are uncomfortable with how close another car is you can slow down and point them by or pull in to the hot pits and give yourself some breathing room.

This link gives the same response I got...it goes to Motorsportreg, but when I hit the link for insurance, it goes to Lockton and then gives a 404 error.

Lunatic 05-11-2015 09:31 AM

We've been down in Southern CA. all winter. Can't wait to get back on ORP in a few weeks. It won't be this event, I'm still down here and will be at Willow Springs that weekend but if you can, don't miss this event. You won't find better teaching than TC or a more challenging track. And you can't beat Bill's lunch. The lunch is worth the drive in itself. BG

That's odd the time I bought insurance it worked fine and it was a TC event. Sorry but I guess you're on your own as far as that is concerned.

This is the reply I got. I am working with TC to figure this out:

Steven,

We don’t have an Organizer approved by that name and we have to have both an Approved Organizer and an Approved Track to offer our coverage. If they run under a different name, let me know and I’ll see if we have them approved and can list the event.

I would like coverage for a single HPDE event at Oregon Raceway Park with Team Continental. Could you see if you could provide coverage for this event, please?

Thank you.

This was just posted on the ICSCC forums from TC:

Quote:

ICSCC workers and racers.

TC's May 22,23,24th event needs your help. We are in need of key positions for Corner working, Scales, e-crew, as well as cooking help.

Corner working is compensated at $70/day, with all meals, lodging (rental house in moro Thursday til Monday), beer, and other giveaways.

Drivers, you can offset your entry fee by bringing your own workers. Bring someone to volunteer for you and get the $70/day!

Please contact racechairman@teamcontinental.com to reserve your compensated worker slot.

Thank you
Peter Belfanti
Obviously he's making his appeal to the racers but anyone wanting to volunteer to help TC fill these spots are welcome and needed.

Most folks aren't aware that all the member clubs of the ICSCC (which includes TC) are all 100% entirely volunteer organizations.. All the work that gets done to host these days and race weekends are done by volunteers.

Sometimes they that volunteer base is thin so if you can/want to help out please reach out.

paiceyfan 05-14-2015 01:23 AM

Just want to post a quick thank you to Jim and the team at TC for working with me to get TC approved at Lockton Motorsport Insurance. It should be ready by Friday and then it will just be a case of setting up a hotel and we are done.

Great news!

About that Hotel.. Considering this is also a race weekend, there's lots of demand for hotel space.

You'll want to start calling places immediately. I booked my spot at the Crews house (BnB in Grass Valley) in Feb. But it's still worth a phone call!
http://oregonraceway.com/our-partners/lodging/

The Road House and the Ranch in Grass Valley both are down dirt roads. One of which is down a long, narrow and very potted dirt where my van bottomed out a few times. FYI. Pretty much all the accommodations in the town of Grass Valley are people's houses.

A lot of folks like the accommodations (relative to the area) in Moro. Personally I chuckle everytime I read "Breaking Winds Lodge".

paiceyfan 05-15-2015 04:41 PM

Took care of it last night! :)

Will be staying in Bigg's Junction...

Cheers!
