SOLVED: No Reverse/Backup Signal or Lights

I no longer have backup lights and my backup camera doesn't show up on the head unit either.

I put a backup camera in over a year ago. It has worked flawlessly and would automatically pop up on the stock BRZ head unit when I went into reverse. About 2 weeks ago this stopped. I figured out my backup lights weren't coming on either. The first thing I did was check the fuse...good. Then I replaced both backup bulbs...still nothing. I pulled the head unit and checked all of the plugs...no issues.

I probed the #2 wire on the 28 pin plug going into the head unit which signals for reverse and it had no signal. See image below provided by www.AutoHarnessHouse.com:

Then I found another location for this signal thanks to www.AutoHarnessHouse.com down by the hood release. I probed that and had no signal either.

Lastly I pulled the fuse again and checked to see that power was getting there, and it is regardless of whether the car is in reverse or not.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on?

Switch at the shifter went for a crap? Would explain why all the back up functions no longer work.

That was my thought as well, do you know where that is accessed? Is it from inside or under the vehicle? If anyone has seen it please share any info you have.

Same thing here, I noticed the reverse indicator in the HUD also doesn't show. Wiggling the shifter gets it pop up which also has the backup lights come back on. What mods do you have that could be related to this? I was thinking it could possibly be my reverse LED's or somehow the MTEC shift springs. I haven't looked into yet since wiggling the shifter is a quick fix and I've been too busy.

I had LED reverse bulbs too which I just replaced with standard bulbs to see if that was the issue. I can't get the signal to show up on the HUD with any sort of wiggling of the shifter but if you can that pretty much tells us there is an issue with the switch/sensor. Maybe the LED bulbs run too much current through the switch causing it to fail or maybe its purely mechanical failure.

It's accessed from under the hood, the switch is part A53 in this diagram

Probably mechanical, because LED bulbs usually consume more than 10 times less energy = less current. I would suspect switch as well.

Thank you @Scenic Driver, the problem is solved...and I have no #@$%ing idea how it happened. I went to look for the A53 switch and look what I found!

A frayed ground wire and the reverse wires pulled out of both ends of the connector! I have never even been in this part of the engine bay before. At first I was thinking mouse...but the wires look cut. After cleaning up the crap this is what it looked like.

I am absolutely blown away. I followed the wires back, which just lay on top of the transmission and I don't see how they could have caught on something to do this.

In the end I just eliminated the plug and soldered new wires between the transmission and the harness and everything is working as normal. WTF?!?!

I'm still having the same issue, it just popped again as it's been getting warmer. I can still get the "R" to pop up in the HUD if I mess around with the shifter.

I just checked those wires and they look fine. Although the way those wires run along the transmission housing I'm thinking it could have melted the shielding somewhere down the line and is causing a short. I'll have the dealer mess with it when I have time to take it there.

bump. Does anybody know what the red clip controls? I need to replace that part. Mine was pinched during a clutch install and I am having a hard time figuring out what it controls and what it is even called.

You have mice crawling up there to keep warm at night. Bet.
