How are you logging at the track?

How do you get your engine's feedback at the track? I'm mainly asking how to get you logs from ecutek or any obd2 source that gets all engine parameters at the track since having a laptop on the passenger seat is out of the question. Software based is my interest, i don't have to have guages everywhere since this isn't a track car but would see the track once in a while and would like to make sure things are ok. Thanks

jvincent 04-05-2015 12:20 PM

I use the Harry's Lap Timer app on my phone and bluetooth OBDII reader.

The only useful measurement it doesn't give is oil pressure.

The nice thing about HLT is that you can record video on the phone and overlay the readings (RPM, speed, gear, etc) onto the video. It also provides graphs / data overlay on the track map.

I just bought an external GPS unit since the phone GPS only samples at 1Hz but with the external I can get 5Hz or 10Hz.

HLT is $20 on Android for the most advanced version.

Edit: If all you want are gauges and data logging, the Torque app will do that as well.

yomny 04-05-2015 04:29 PM

Thanks man I have Harry's lap timer and it's pretty cool. I was more interested not in telemetry but actual engine parameters. Coolant, oil temp, boost, fuel trims, afr, knock...

jvincent 04-05-2015 04:34 PM

I think Torque will give you all of those.

Yeah I'm looking into a similar app. Just trapped one of those elm wifi obd2 transmitter to read with an iPhone app.

dp1 04-05-2015 05:29 PM

OBDLink MX adapters are good (http://www.obdlink.com). I use the WiFi MX with iPhone, DashCommand for diagnostics, Harry's Laptimer for track/ax, external bluetooth GPS (Dual 150A)

xwd 04-05-2015 08:02 PM

The OBDLink MX is the best BT reader I've used.

Since I have Ecutek I have a small Windows tablet (Venue 8 Pro) I use to datalog engine parameters sometimes, but it requires a cable. Hard to beat the data you get and the resolution though. Using an external input I have it logging wideband AFR also, but no way to log oil pressure.

I believe the OFT box can record most parameters as well now.

Yeah I figured it'll be hard to log afr, oil pressure and even knock since these aren't things the obd2 reports, that I know unless using a more advanced software like ecutek. I guess it'll do to keep an eye on temps. Even though oft and ecutek could be used it'll be a tad uncomfortable, possibly risky having those longer obd2 connectors under the dash at a track drive.

PS-thanks for your feedback.

ddeflyer 04-06-2015 01:48 AM

Pretty sure the engine doesn't know the oil pressure, only that there is pressure or not.

yomny 04-06-2015 07:49 AM

Yeah oil pressure isn't measured or at least is not displayed. Maybe he meant temp since oil pressure was never mentioned before in this thread.

mav1178 04-06-2015 01:40 PM

Aim Solo DL.

Datalogging, plus I set up the display to show real-time lap times (plus delta to lowest session time).

But in all honesty, I don't need to see all the parameters at the track. Aside from temps, the other stuff is useless unless you have a horrible tune.

Yeah that is true I was just wondering if there was a way without having to need someone next to you holding your laptop to get a good log. So aim solo gives you temps? Thanks

GotMunchies? 04-06-2015 03:06 PM

For those using their phones to log data, what mounts are you using to keep them from flying about the cabin?

Most of the OBDII apps give you temps.

Aim Solo DL talks can bus so it gets the data faster and also pulls some nice stuff like accelerometer data and brake pressure.

wparsons 04-06-2015 03:11 PM

There isn't an oil pressure sensor, so you'll never get oil pressure unless you've added an aftermarket sensor. The stock one just gives a yay/nay on pressure, and you'd have to lose A LOT of pressure for it to say nay, more than you'd want to wait to hear from it.

They also make a fantastic holder for Aim Solo DL: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002IV6OHC"]Amazon.com: Ram Mount RAM-B-166U Double Ball Twist-Lock Suction Cup Mount: GPS & Navigation[/ame]

Aim Solo DL is what we will be using in our Project BRZ for Track/Street. In our Spec86 we will be running the Aim MXL2 Dash.

We are also now an Authorized AIM Dealer so anyone on here who is interested in an AIM product we will be doing a group buy/initial buy sale this month. E-mail us for details sales@azpinstalls.com

Temps available:
oil
water
air

I have mine set up to read 4 things when I'm on the track:
oil temp
water temp
best lap time
delta vs best lap time

The last one is very handy, it adjusts as I am driving on the track so it can give me an approximation of how fast/slow I am on the track, good way to keep track of where you are faster (or slower) and see how your driving progresses.

Most factory oil pressure switches are just a warning light, it comes on basically when you're out of oil. You're better off investing in an actual oil pressure sensor via oil filter sandwich adapter.

Every other setting is completely useless at the track unless you are tuning.... which you should be doing via a laptop or other full-function device.

FRSfan111 04-06-2015 08:35 PM

I use Harry's lap timer and dash command. No way to monitor oil pressure but I installed an oil pressure gauge when I installed my oil cooler so I can moniter it.

frssfo 04-06-2015 09:31 PM

If you're just looking to log temps then Harry's Lap Timer or similar would be ok. If you're looking to log data to analyze your driving, so that you can use it to improve, then I'd recommend the AIM Solo DL. There's a bunch of people on this forum who use them, so you'd have a community to learn from and compare data with.

You can set up a custom screen on the AIM to show water and oil temp in real time (or anything else for that matter) for when you're on the track.

Oil pressure isn't measured by the ECU, there's just an "idiot" light that comes on when oil pressure is too low. You can get an oil pressure gauge for that. Here's the one I'm putting in - just use the subaru oil galley plug to fit the sensor. http://prosportgauges.com/amber-whit...ure-gauge.aspx

puma 04-07-2015 09:01 AM

AIM solo DL is the best tool to have no question.

We use the P3 Cars gauge for gauges as they blend nicely for an OEM look. You can get an oil pressure sensor that will work with the P3 Gauge which is pretty nice.

I am willing to ride along and hold your laptop. I will even give you live readings if you want.

Sounds like a plan ;) waiting on the oil cooler and hood to get here to jump on the track. Trying to help those temps stay down and get some track time before summer really sets in.

Yeah I actually considered it but have my wideband/boost in the AC cent. Still a good choice to see al those readings.

Our first load of AIM Solos and Solo DLs came in and went out! Some to FT86Club members!

We are having a few units drop shipped to the track for us for this weekend.

I'm looking forward to testing the Solo DL on our Spec86 this weekend. Although that unit will ultimately go in our Project BRZ and the MXL2 or MXG will go in the Spec86.

I have been happy with my Nexus 7, Torque app and Bluetooth ODB2 sensor method, it is way cheaper than the AIM solo option but pf course AIM solo is more comprehensive unit but TBH never needed one.. I also use GoPro and my cell phone app for track data and some new lap timer apps can also merge engine data if the RPM gauge and few other things are very important :)

Just got my obd2 wifi elm thing and tested it with a free iOS app and it worked great, right off the bat, with oil temps and all. I'll opt for the paid version which is supposed to be better. To keep an eye on temps I'd say a cheaper alternative like this is more cost effective. Thanks!

You may be able to set alarms and etc, Torque app didn't have the PID for the oil temps so I had to manually edit the app to include the parameters..
What kind of app is that you installed in ios?

Its called EOBD- Facile, looks a bit cheap but then again its free lol. Probably end up getting either dash command or fusion for $10.

ddeflyer 04-17-2015 04:52 PM

Hard to be an Aim Solo DL for a fairly stock 86. If you need more sensors though it becomes lacking. At this point I am trying out a "Race Capture Pro v2" on my spec miata so I can have analog channels.

jflogerzi 04-22-2015 12:12 PM

Use an old Samsung gs3 Bluetooth odb2 adapter. This along with torque. I only monitor 2 things. Oil and coolant temps. Then i use the phone to track lap times. Its cheap and works decently.

strat61caster 04-22-2015 02:26 PM

Is it possible to get oil temps from Harry's Lap Timer? I know it's unlikely but it's really the only thing it's lacking for me.

Might have to compromise and use torque for the first few runs than switch to Harry's once I'm confident that the car is safe and I'm hunting for speed.

jvincent 04-22-2015 02:31 PM

Yes, HLT provides oil temps. It was added late last summer.

stugray 04-22-2015 02:42 PM

I have used torque with the ELM327 bluetooth ODB reader.

I also have a traqmate with the camera, but it cannot read very many engine parameters and cannot do it over OBD (it uses analog inputs).

For my 71 vintage racecar I built my own datalogger from scratch.
It logs: Tach, 2XEGTs, 2XCHTs, AFR, Fuel pressure, oil temp & pressure & throttle position. it writes it all to a micro-sdcard or can display it realtime on a droid phone.
I plan on adding GPS & accelerometer data next.
Total cost was ~$300 in parts.

It can also monitor any of those and turn on the dash warning light if any go out of range.
Cool thing was at the track last weekend, I felt the car loosing power so I brought it in and looked at the data.
I could immediately tell that my AFR was tredning higher & higher and one of my EGTs dropped abruptly by 1000 degrees.
Pulled the main jets and sure enough - cyl #3 jet was clogged completely.

This was just minutes after a longtime "racing expert" was telling me that logging data was a waste of time :-)

Pat 04-22-2015 03:43 PM

I know very little about data logging, but here is a new option for Android users:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Kircher-Electronics-Force-OBDII-Performance/dp/B00MI5GE5A?tag=viglink28253-20"]Force OBDII[/ame]
Disclaimer: this was developed by a friend of mine. I think he's a pretty bright guy and knows his stuff. That said, I don't have significant experience with data logging, so if you guys have any opinion about it, I'd love to hear it.

If he can get me a limited evaluation license (lets say... 30 days), I'll be more than happy to give him my feedback.

Mind posting up how to get to it? HLT is not very intuitive for me to navigate.

I know the community had to develop a custom PID for Torque to work with the Toyobaru's sensor.
