What can I do about poke? Don't know what I'm doing

Hello. I got some summer wheels and tires for my FR-S. I bought them and had them installed at TireRack. I got 18x8.5s with 235/40 tires.

They seem to look pretty nice but I got a problem. Rocks are getting flung up onto the door. The tires are poking out of the wheel wells a little. What can I do? I can't tell if there is a spacer or not. There is no wheel rub in front. Even if a spacer is used then if I move it in I might create rub.

Any suggestions? Anything from fenders to rock guards to fitment is welcome. Attachment 106067

Mud flaps?

PantsDants 04-02-2015 07:54 PM

RallyArmor mud flaps should help to catch a lot of the stuff flying up off of your tires; they can be adjusted outward over an inch from the sides of the fender.

^not sure if serious

Really? I guess I never noticed anyone with flaps.

Troll? Your wheels look perfectly flush front and back?

Mud flaps would help, but that's a pretty distinct look so be sure you want to go that route.

They definitely don't sound like it. I went from some muffled road noise on the way to get them installed to sounding like hail hitting my car (rocks and stuff getting kicked up from the street).

Edit: no trolloling here. Just live in a place with terrible streets. Really bad man. Never seen streets so bad before.

doesnt look like you have spacers installed... it just looks like wheels with a slightly lower offset. with 8.5" width wheels, im guessing your offset is around the low 30s for it to look like that. if you're concerned with that amount of tire going past the bottom half of the fender (which honestly is not that much), then your only other option is to switch to wheels with a higher offset to tuck those back inside more... or just drive on roads that arent as gravel-y

Even the OEM mudguards would help a bit and is more subtle than the rallyarmor.

Perfect. Just found some on eBay. Those should help a lot and not look huge lol

Don't see any poke there

Yah. It looks like I used the wrong word. It isn't poking out of the top just sticking out farther than I thought it should (not enough offset for my liking).

Honestly, I got them because they were dirt cheap wheels $90 a piece.

Edit: I don't think I'll swap the wheels unless I just can't handle it. I like the oem style guards idea.

Keep in mind a stickier tire will also throw rocks up into the wheel wells more than the stockers.

The stock wheels/tires seem to throw up plenty on their own. My paint is showing plenty of evidence of this and I've had the stock setup for 43k miles.

Now that you mention it, right when I moved here I started hearing this but not quite this bad. It went away when I got blizzaks for the winter but those are very soft. I wonder it it's because I got them skinnier to work well in the snow. Or maybe just less rubber actually on the road.
The northern Midwest streets look like the cities had some bad acne.

Looks like they are 18x8.5 +45

Mad_Mike 04-02-2015 11:17 PM

I know exactly what you mean. I swap from my stock wheels to my track wheels (17x9+45) often and while there isn't any poke, there is always a noticeable difference in the amount of road debri I hear hitting the side of the car and wheel wells. I have oem mud guards which I'm sure help but still happens.

alan.chalkley 04-03-2015 07:31 AM

Any tyres on gravel will throw debris around.
Cars coming in the opposite direction throw up the most that cause damage.

wparsons 04-03-2015 12:15 PM

Is it actually hitting the doors, or just the inside of the fenders?

rinnamon 04-04-2015 03:32 PM

It looks like both. Once I got on the highway and out of South Bend, things improved dramatically BTW!

I got a set of OEM splash guard from amazon for $50 hopefully they will improve the situation. The +45 rims were actually suggested by the tire rack website. ... I mean, I like the way they look (!) but they are definitely outside OEM specs.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Looks pretty good. Just a little bit of tire sticking out past the guard in the back and even less in the front.
Either they swept the streets or the guards made a difference because no more clink in South Bend.

Also, I got 33.6 mpg on the way down to middle Indiana and 35.6 on the way back! Even better, my tires are taller so +3% according to the tire guide PDF somewhere floating around this forum. I thought my gas mileage would get worse due to the wide tires I got. I attribute my better gas mileage on the way back to driving behind some slower people. 50 mph looks optimal for 6th.

Anyway, here's what it looks like now
