Tips for new Maryland resident

Hey guys,

I recently moved to Maryland (from Iowa). I'm still rocking my custom Iowa plates but know I need to get me some MD tags (at some point at least). Anybody informed on what is involved in doing that, especially from a cost perspective?

Also looking for a detailer that can handle some dings, ideally in Rockville, and maybe window tint? Any recommendations? :)

I'm also trying to decide what wheels to put on with the summer tires too… Is there a place where I could get some knowledgeable advice? Trying to figure out size and fit (e.g. will 18x8.5 fit on stock suspensions? what kind of offset to get the wheels as flush as possible? etc). Any pointers would be greatly appreciated… :)

Thank you in advance… :party0030:

For plates, look on the Maryland DMV website; it should give you all the costs.

For wheels, check the Wheel Directory, Gallery, and Fitment Guide sticky.

Beware of drivers here, worst state I've ever driven on.

Have you ever been to Texas?

Welcome to Maryland, home of the MVA. Because the DMV just isn't quite terrible enough.

Drivers come from everywhere, so there is a little crazy from all over the country which makes Baltimore the 3rd worst in the nation trailing a little behind DC.

I got my tint done at the Tint Man in Glen Burnie, but that may be a bit far for you. I'm sure there are decent options out that way.

Winners window tint in Rockville. They do great work.

Also, you don't have to worry about the drivers as much as you have to worry about the potholes. You might want to hold off on a good set of wheels.

Also reason to invest in a dash cam.

edit: removed paranoia

Get ready for your emissions notice within 2 months of registering your vehicle.

You'll need to set aside $15 for the emissions test I think. Sometimes they just check your gas cap. Most times they plug in an OBD2 sensor. Front plate required. Tint limit is 35%.
Montgomery County (Rockville) Police are well paid and abundant. Rockville Pike is one of the few places I've seen the nicest Mercedes AMG pull up next to a geo metro that barely runs anymore.

Maryland state inspections are pretty strict relative to some other states, so be careful if you purchase a car from out of state.

I've been referred to a tuner shop close to Rockville Pike, Baker Performance, nice guy professional. Seems busy though find him on FB

Not that I'm against Baker. I hear they do great work and he's worked on my Supras in the past when he was with different tuner shop that went out of business some years ago. I was happy with the work. He's the best GTR service/tuner in the area. Everyone has there own opinions on who's good and who sucks. Most are fairly good and have ran into circumstances that have yielded bad reviews. The customer expects X and the tuner delivers X but didn't understand by doing X you now have to deal with Y. My suggestion is not plugging a specific shop but find someone that supports the forum and give him your business. That's how it should work. Just my opinion.

To Ibill4you's point. He brought up a good point on the legal tint threshold. Your glass is tinted slightly from the factory so if you lay 35% film it's going to be darker and the state police in MD will get you for this. It's only a matter of time.

That's a really great point you have there. I am probably going to drive down to have PTuning work on my car. I feel much better knowing that a business has invested it's time and reputation to our community, which gives us consumers a little more leverage and gives everyone a little more transparency.

can Vouch for Ptuning they are great! Ive been a long standing customer for 10 years and counting!

As for everything else

Look into non MVA locations for tag/title work

http://tagsintenminutes.com/ is the best so far, you maybe pay $20 more dollars compared to the MVA but you are helping out a local business and they are so friendly and no lines I would pay $100 more to deal with them than any government tag/title location lol.

Look in Mid Atlantic Chat if you would like any detailing services, hit me up! Tint I hear there is a good location in laurel, MD on Route 1. If you want info also hit me up will let you know.

Thanks and welcome to MD. We aren't that bad :)
