I personally love the FiST and the twins. Thought this was a funny read.

The FiST is good value for the price, but the more I think about it, it's too small. It doesn't have the practicality I would want from a hot hatch.

The FiST has 31" of leg room in the rear (vs. 36" in a GTI.) It also has just 26 cf of luggage room with the rear seats folded (vs. 46 cf for the GTI.)

The FoST is probably the car I'd pick if I had to replace my FR-S and GTI with a single car. Not as fun as an FR-S and not as refined as a GTI, but a nice middle ground between the two.

I partly agree....the FiST does almost everything right. Its an incredible car....right up until you sit in one. The seating position is so awful, you sit up so high. Its like you are ON the car, not IN it.

The focus did a better job of this, but is just so big.

Yeah that's the other thing I heard about the FiST - it's like sitting on a bar stool with a steering wheel. Still crazy they sell them under $20k though.

Personally I think the FoST is a good size for a hot hatch. The rear seats might even be a little tight for what I expect, but I could make it work.

If you get the chance, go and test drive one. It really is a great car, seating position just isn't right...but what can you expect out of a performance hatch?

My GF owns a Fiesta ST and this is my biggest complaint. The seat is too high and so is the center consul. My driving position in her car puts my elbow in the center consul every time i shift into an even gear. Its a great car though otherwise.

You guys have all been spoiled with the FRZ platform I guess.

My DD (see sig) sits just as high and I've been in the FiST and FoST and I think the reason why you think the FoST sits better is because the car is overall bigger. I don't think your head, relative to the road, are that much different.

More seriously, one of the main reasons to buy a hot hatch is for the practicality and cargo space - two areas where the FiST lacks. The big brother FoST (or a car like the GTI) is about the right size, at least IMO.

And you have to consider Ford's BS way of measuring rear legroom. They basically lie by repositioning the front seat when they measure the rear seat room when everyone else leaves the front seat in the position where they measured front legroom.

You know what, that would probably explain why the FoST's rear seats felt a little cramped. On paper, it's just a 2" difference between the FoST and GTI. Different story when you actually sit in them though.

Back in november we cross shopped the fist and mk7 gti for gfmobile. She had a mk6 tdi golf.

I desperately wanted her to get the fist (just because it would have been less money in a car to drive 100k).

She wanted the gti.

She got the gti

its much better than the mkv and mk6, it also knocks the fost out of consideration automatically, theres no regrets.

The mk7 is definitely nice. I thought about trading up, but given the way I use my mk6 (basically a sporty DD), it didn't make sense for that extra performance.

That said, I think there's a place for the FoST in the market. It's still probably the go-to choice for people who want a more fun car than the GTI and don't care about interior refinement. Of the US hot hatches, it's the most willing to lift-throttle oversteer, which is important since we're talking about FWD cars that can't rotate on power. I might actually take it over the mk7 GTI if I needed to consolidate my cars.
