CEL light on, how do I reset it?
 

Got some work done at a body shop while I was on vacation, came back to a pretty shiny Betty (my FRS's name) with a shiny new CEL. The body shop owner (nice lady) explained they had to jumpstart it twice because the trunk was popped and the light was on.

Anyway, I now have a CEL with no symptoms. I disconnected the positive on the battery for a few and reconnected, still no luck. I've searched and searched and I haven't found a way to reset the light. Does anybody know an easy way to do it?

Turn the car on and let it run a bit and turn it off again, repeat. Should reset after 5 cycles.

I'd get the code pulled though, just 'cause you trust the body guy doesn't mean it's not something else. Don't worry you can get the light off and still pull the code later, the car will store it.

Take it in!
If there is a problem big enough that it keeps the light on you want it checked sooner not later.
Usually minor or temporary issues will clear by either disconnecting the battery or the restart so it may be something bigger.

something is not right. pull the code with OBII scanner and report back and i would take it back to shop

Any updates did you pull the code?

Tighten the gas cap?

If it's not resetting you either didn't let it run long enough or the problem is persisting continuing to cause the error.

Most auto stores will loan you an OBD II scanner and it takes less than 5 minutes to read oout the codes.

OR you can spend $10 on an ELM357 ODB-II tool on ebay and download the free app "Torque" for a droid phone.
You can read out & reset the codes and log data for less than $15

Some lady with the same issue on her WRX said it got pretty serious after a while. I'd definitely take it into Subaru ASAP.

I hope it's not as serious as that, but I will be at the dealer tomorrow. I found online the reason for this code is turning the car on for less than 15s turning it off and then a second time for less than 15s and then letting it sit for 5hrs or more. Seems totally plausible for that to occur in a body shop, nonetheless I'm still not driving it much till tomorrow's trip to the dealer.

A little off topic, but shouldn't you disconnect the negative? Not positive? It doesn't matter for CEL. But just in case if you were to disconnect it again in the future for another purpose.
