For those with Aftermarket Headunits
 

Hello all. I am probably one of the biggest noobs you'll meet when it comes to a cars electronics. However I'm really interested in upgrading the headunit in my FRS. I was considering the Pioneer AppRadio 3. However this is the first time I've ever done this mod and I'm a little confused on what exactly is needed. My question is, once I buy the radio itself and whatever contents are in the box, is there anything else that's needed? I know with my first car it was a little more complex cuz there was adapters needed for the steering wheel controls and all this yada yada. I'm thinking it should probably be simpler for the FRS but I'm not sure what else, if anything, is needed? Any help here from any of our car tech guru's would be greatly appreciated :thanks::thanks:

Not a car tech but when I have replaced a headunit, Crutchfield shipped all the adapters I needed.

On a side note, not sure if you use an Android or Apple but there is some advances coming with both of these incorporating auto functions. Both look pretty nice and add some pretty neat functionality. If you can wait it out a bit, there will be a lot more options out there.

Ah ok so they just shipped everything else you needed along with your order?

Oh and I'm currently using an iPhone 6 and will probably continue with Apple for the foreseeable future

Had a reverse camera installed, replaced all the speakers with JL's and had a small 4 channel amp put in. Could not be happier. They made up some brackets for the rear so I could upgrade to 5.25" ones. Wow what a difference it made.

When installing aftermarket head units I would suggest making sure all of your ports still work, such as USB and Aux. I checked with best buy last time and they told me there's not current adapter to make the stock usb work- not sure how true is that. Make sure the Bluetooth works with the in-car mic too.

Also, you are right in that our car is simpler without the steering wheel controls to worry about.

There were a lot of new head units featuring Apple car play and android auto shown at CES this year, I would suggest researching whether you want those feature or not. If you do, I suggest waiting as a lot more aftermarket head units will have those and prices sure will drop a bit.

Crutchfield sent everything I needed but this was a few years ago and it could have changed. As noted above, things like the USB port and aux port might not work with the headunit.

Installation should be pretty easy though.

wireharness, dash kit, etc etc

when i replaced my headunit i was to lazy to use the factory USB/AUX cable... only real reason is i never used them to begin with


if you dont trust yourself doing the job, its not expensive to get it done,
the shop i go to charges $75 an hour to do the job, 90% of the time, it takes us less than an hour to do it

There are DIY's on how to get the USB and AUX working with the stock ports.

Bluetooth will have to use the mic that usually comes with the head unit.
