1st time using Sports Mode on Auto yesterday. WTF LOL
Yo everyone. Not sure if I'm in the wrong section but I wanna see if I'm the only one here thinking of this. So I've had my '13 Automatic Whiteout FRS for about 2 months now. I'm still working out small kinks on this quirky little car. Any who when i first got the car I was kinda bummed I couldn't find a manual in my price range so I picked up an auto. I never messed around with the SPORT VCS, SPORT, or SNOW mode as i thought they were just "gimicky". Since owning this car I felt like I should have just waited a month or 2 more and just picked up my 370z as I felt this whip lacks a little HP even though it claims 200HP. So last night I'm driving home on the 60 freeway out here in Los Angeles and I'm like screw it I'm gonna start pressing buttons. And HOLY SHIT... this car is a completely different beast when driven under sport mode. This whole time this car felt like a slightly faster "grocery getter" and this hidden untapped power has been there the whole time?
Anyone else drive this car for a while before turning SPORT on and feeling like a dumbass for never having turned it on since the beginning?? Lol :bonk: |
I have MT but if I got the auto I would have had it in sport on my way out of the lot!
|
Sports mode activates the turbo.

;)Hmmmms.....I must try sport mode....of course when I get on the freeway....freeway driving here on Oahu is :sigh: just blah....LOL! ;)

Except for when it rains, but that's rare in Bakersfield... |
I always turn everything off as soon as I start up the car haha. :)
|
I was unaware the car is "quirky". LOL at "whip" as well.
|
it doesnt make the car faster. it just keeps it in gear longer instead of making early fuel conserving shifts. try driving it in manual mode
|
For me it's start car, press Sport and VSC. I use the paddle to down shift a lot. Manual shifting works well.
The car is hoot to drive I don't regret buying the AT version. |
OP is going to stroke if he puts his AT into manual mode.

I have been trying Sport mode some lately just to see what it does. Seems to keep you in one gear lower than non-Sport and hold it longer than I want. This just wastes gas. The only advantage is it locks up the torque convertor in all gears except 1 so the car feels less slushy. I find Manual mode better- I can choose the gear I want when I want it and not have to wait for the tranny in sport mode to finally upshift. It is actually kind of fun to hit the paddle twice to go from 4 to 2 when approaching a corner and hear it downshift faster than a person could do it. And you can never blow up the engine by mistakenly downshifting into an incorrect lower gear like you can with a manual. |

Car is not going faster but with sports mode your running at a higher rev range so your experiencing more power delivery, this car's engine comes to life at higher RPMs.
|
This car needs a dual clutch trans. Much lighter than an auto and slightly heavier than a manual. I think they cost more. Not sure.
|
Man, if only Scion/Subaru included a document that 'splained the various modes an AT has and what they do.

Sports mode isn't really suited for daily driving, because it will hold gears even at cruising speeds; which can be fixed with a paddle shift up. It will definitely shine on the track or auto-x where you need it to hold the revs.
|
Why not just drive in manual? The only time I've used Auto mode is when the gf has to put her head on my lap as I'm driving:thumbup:
I forgot how this car drives in auto with sport mode. |
I find it funny how there are so many manual fan boys. Sure my past cars were manuals, yeah I've done experienced it all and it was much fun. Local homies hated that I didn't opt for the manual transmission. If only they knew our auto with the rev management/tranny still makes it a blast to drive.

Most people that hate on the AT probably haven't driven it in manual mode. I love it, and despite being a slush box it shifts faster than I could. Sidenote: my daily is a manual. |
The auto is amazingly quick at shifting, the only thing it lacks is the driver enagegment, and the complete lack of ability to hoon around, but on the roads and track, its perfectly fine. I have never used sport mode, I always use manual mode.
|
Sport mode and traction control off (hold traction button for 5 seconds) is the only way to drive auto.
Btw, there's no shame in admitting you got an Auto because LA traffic sucks (because it does) and you don't want to be using a manual through all of that. Most people would feel the same way. |
Sport mode is really worth driving in all the time, especially in traffic. You get used to how it gear breaks and soon it will feel just natural and smooth. Most times I can drop it to 3rd, 2nd and gently apply the breaks approaching a stop. Mine spends most its time in 3rd / 4th if just zipping round in 60~70km/h zones.
You just need to get used to popping into a higher gear (if worried about drone or saving a little fuel). Mine generally sits around the 2500 rpm range and throttle response is delicious. |
OP hold down the trac button for 4 seconds and you'll disengage the traction control completely. You'll have two lights on your dash when this is active.

Sports Mode = Race Mode

Combine the sport mode with an ecutek tune from HRI Tuning and a header and you'll find an even bigger grin on your face.

If getting sideways around corners driving through a development next to a row of minivans and priuses (pri'i?) doesn't meet your definition of "hooning around", I would really like to know what does. Because you can sure as hell do that in the AT. |
I was thinking the same thing...

If traction control is off, there is no problem "hooning" around in an AT... Jaden |

Don't forget it makes your 86 side badges light up and activate so they tap into those extra hp's just like those big stickers on a Civic do. BTW, other day I saw a few Ford stickers on a Civic.... yeah.... http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/6xgAAO.../s-l1600/r.jpg |
sports mode?.. my cars always in sports mode lol
