FI, Lowered compression, Forged internals... Break in oil?
I just finished rebuilding my motor and am hopefully going to fire it today. Lowered compression with forged pistons and rods for a turbo application.
I was planning to run a 5/30 or similar conventional oil for a half hour or so before running my usual 5/30 or 5/40 300V Synthetic. Does anybody have any reccomendations on a good break in oil? |
I've read on other subaru forums to use Shell Rotella T 15W40. Anybody have any experience with this in our engines? It just seems a bit heavy

If you want the absolute maximum zinc content (not saying that is what you want) then you can use whatever oil you choose and add "Comp Cams Engine Break-in oil additive"
ZDDP ratings give it the higest Zinc levels, second best is Brad Penn. http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps1v5cfv5i.png |
I wouldn't use a 40 grade unless your clearances allow it. Rotella does have T5 10W-30, but it is semi-synthetic.
If you're looking for a 30 grade break-in oil, Royal Purple and Amsoil both have one. IAG Performance in Maryland uses the RP for all of their built Subaru's. Another option is Red Line Break in oil additive which you can add to any oil and one bottle has enough for several changes. I would put more than a half hour on a break-in oil though. http://www.cobbtuning.com/Technical-...es-s/70721.htm ^ Edit: Oh yeah, Brad Penn has a 30 grade break-in oil has well. http://www.penngrade1.com/Products/H...ak-In-Oil.aspx |
I used a basic 10w30 conventional with a bottle of comp cams break in additive. We ran it on the dyno for probably half hour and checked for leaks before cool down and switching out. Been using 10w30 valveoline synthetic ever since.
