WeatherTech Floor Liner Issue

2 Attachment(s)
WARNING: Something to be aware of if you have or plan on purchasing the WeatherTech Floor liners.

I purchased the WeatherTech (444821) Floorliner, for my FR-S and had them in the car for about 9 months. I just took out the driver side FloorLiner to clean off the dirt from winter and noticed an issue. The Liner covers half of the dead pedal so small rocks, sand size debris and salt must get scraped off the shoe and fall in-between the liner and the aluminum plate which ends up scratching the metal.

I keep my car extremely clean so this surprised me to find the damage. I contacted WeatherTech and they told me they had not heard of this complaint or issue from anyone one else, here is what they said:

"Thank you for contacting WeatherTech. I haven’t seen something like this before with that vehicle – is your area really rocky? I’m thinking to avoid this in the future you will need to remove the liner weekly to make sure nothing is sandwiched back there and rubbing in between that edge."

"Thank you for the feedback. I talked to one of the product managers and he has never heard this feedback before. I think it would be relevant to bring up with other people in your area that were thinking about getting the liners – warning them that they fit so well that if you lodge a rock behind that area (from your shoe being above the liner) that the rock won’t just fall to the floor. I have passed this information as feedback to the product development team but there are no immediate changes to the part planned that I am aware of."

Other than this issue the liners are great, and give more coverage from the factory mats. The downtown STL city parking garage I park in is filthy and they help keep the dirt/grime off the rest of the floorboards. I also have a city alley garage at home so there are a lot of small sand size rocks that can cling to my shoes if it is wet. My solution to help stop damage is to put a sock behind the floor liner where it touches the dead pedal (out of view), so if debris falls in that area it might cushion it enough to not cause damage in-between cleanings.

Let me know if anyone else has the same issue.

Well mine looks somewhat like that and I don't have any floormats besides OEM. I'd take a little extra wear on the dead pedal over damaging carpets. Dead pedal is much easier to replace and is going to get marked up regardless.

Thanks for the heads up!
But... your title may be a tad melodramatic.

I expected some scratching over time, however my Aluminum pedals I had on my tC didn't show any damage like this, light scratching lightly visible at most.

Deep scarring in the metal due to debris getting trapped in-between the floor liner. Seems like a big danger warning for anyone who likes to keep things looking nice. This was only after 5,000 miles of driving less than a year. Now has more interior damage than my tC had after over 9 years.

The damage is only behind the "protected" liner. I could have titled it Issue vs danger.

I keep mine in all year so I don't care.

Man! I had the weathertech mats ordered a couple days after picking the car up. Although I bought my car at the start of December, so I felt like it was a necessity.

Good to know about this, but I'll take a scratched up, easily replaceable dead pedal over my carpets being saturated in salt, debris and grime.

I don't walk through enough dirt to cause this LOL

But I have noticed that pedal getting dirty under the weathertechs. They should extend the cover up higher, or make it lower, either one.

Man I saw DANGER and was worried about a pedal sticking or life threatening issue haha.

I've actually wondered why they didn't make them higher up as well...

This. You can always replace the dead pedal. Its a bit more work to replace carpeting ;)

I have the same issue but in the end you can either Polish it out or if too bad of damage you can replace for under $50.

My only issue with these liners is behind the gas pedal I felt it should be longer. Seems a little short... I'm worried it might cause interference with gas pedal. Other than that they work really well.
