Just wanted to say hi to everyone on the forum and of course ask some knowledgeable petrol heads advice. I got my 86 2 weeks ago (4500km on it) and love every millisecond of it.

I have a few questions to ask if you guys don’t mind?

1.Seeing that it’s a boxer engine is it okay to drive the 86 hard (high revs/low gears)

2.How long does one have to wait before you can drive it hard from engine start?

3.Was thinking about getting a Unichip, any thoughts?

4.Also wanted to get a custom exhaust done by RG MotorSports. Do you guys know if that will void my warranty?

5.Where can I buy a boot spoiler and get it fitted/sprayed?

1. As long as you don't pass the rev limit, the engine was designed to run below it.
2. For me usually about 10 minutes after first start up at 23-25c. Or about 5 minutes after coolant fully warms up. Oil warms up a little slower, so some time after coolant warms up.
3. Unichip seems ok, but most people here go for www.openflashtablet.com aka oft, They are always updating and improving the product and they only have a couple applications so they spend more time on ours. Some people go ecutek also. Read up on the differences.
4. It is impossible to void your warranty, unless you pass the mileage or date limits. They can only deny you warranty work. Laws are different in each country though. You should be fine with an exhaust swap.
5. You can buy a painted boot spoiler from the dealer. Or just order it and have it painted at a paint shop.

TIP: Try to search before posting. The search here isn't so great so use google and put :site ft86club.com in front of your search and it should work good.

I think you shouldnt drive it hard that early. Its a new car tho so be gentle at first.

If you don't drive it hard, Toyota will void your warranty :D Just kidding,

Always healthy to let oil temps warm up before you can drive it hard.
Especially in Winter,

Also make sure you don't use the incorrect coolants.

Have not heard many happy Normally Aspirated 86 stories with Unichip,
Open Flash Tuning is the cleanest and easiest way that I know of.:iono:

There are a few options in SA, namely:

-RMS -
Supported by Delicious Tuning
in the US (Remote tuning), custom tuning ranges from R9,000 (95 pump tunes) to +R25,000(Flex fuel kits, if you want to run ethanol e50 / e85)

-Phoenix Performance -
Local Support with +10years experience
- Tuning and custom tuning from R3,500 to R5,000 with free map upgrades for life. (95 pump tunes and Ethanol tunes e50)

-Free maps available online -
(Open Source),
you will have to buy an ecu flashing device (Approx R5,000 to R7,000 depending on shipping and VAT),
most of the maps freely available online are designed for 98pump fuel (International Markets, with different grades of fuel),
so you will have to be running Octane Booster every day in order to prevent damage to your engine in the long run.
Also...if shit hits the fan...you are on your own.
(Unless you have the skills to perform custom tuning and enough money to buy a new engine).

CPI Tuning -
Copy and Paste Inc Tuning (LOL, Just teasing:D)
They have some impressive work in Durban, but on Octane booster?, have not seen results on 95pump fuel.

RGM Custom exhaust will set you back approx R8,000 to R10,000.
As much as Rob is an awesome person, The exhaust is not worth putting if you do not intend going RGM Supercharged in the future.

Subaru SA sells a performance exhaust for approx R5300 to R5500 which is manufactured at De Graaf in Gauteng. This exhaust has proved gains and a better exhaust tone (In my opinion) than others.
(Value for money).
Also note Toyota will find it harder to void your warranty if you have a bolt on exhaust that you bought from Subaru.
(Note the BRZ comes standard with the De Graaf exhaust)

Powerflow is also currently in development of a Header/Exhaust package.

Key to not voiding your warranty is a good relationship with your Toyota dealership, (this includes having UEL headers, tune, etc)


5.Where can I buy a boot spoiler and get it fitted/sprayed?

Carbon Sport in Edenvale stocks spoilers and kits as well,

I am also on the look out for a decent spoiler, not a fan of the bulky TRD spoiler from the dealerships.

There are options to import AD Style Spoilers using eBay / Amazon and other international vendors, but the time it takes, shipping costs, customs fees etc is a bit of a hassle.

Other Tips:

Consider VPS, the paint on these cars chip easily, not sure because of the actual paint or spirited driving, lol

Try making it to SuperTrax days at Zwartkops, theres a small JHB 86 community you will meet there, they are always willing to help.

I know people that keep their ride stock, and they still love it everyday

Also out of interest ...why are you considering software/tuning?

Is it for power gains on a N/A vehicle? (I see you are located in JHB as well)
You should take some time to think about what you want to achieve.

ZAR/kw Ratio is well over R1000/kw for a Normally aspirated vehicle at the reef.

Are you expecting significant gains? Or just want a sporty sounding vehicle and / or would like to eliminate the dreaded Torque dip between 3000-5000rpms?

If you are looking for significant gains, consider going FI(Forced Induction) (Turbo Charged/Supercharged).

If not, a decent N/A set up would be a performance exhaust, UEL (Unequal Length) Headers, and a Tune.

Don't buy a uni chip use a flash programming system for tuning.

You can always flash back to stock in minutes for dealer visits.

nice and welcome! I usually wait for the heatgauge to be at temp and then a few minutes more for the oil to temp to catch up, then its hoonigan time! I change just before the limiter, so my shift light is set at 7300.

you have 4500 kms, i say its fine to go for it...

Some people may not agree, but I redlined mine a few times even before it was close to 1000kms... and its fine, unlike some other guys, does not use coolant or any oil at all.

@147kW , @FT_86_SM_GP seems to have summed it up perfectly.

In short, your ECU is powerful and capable enough to be remapped without the help of any piggyback/chip tuning options, which is why we have created a range of maps/tunes to suit various modifications and fuel types without requiring any additional modifications to the vehicle.

We have found the best physical mod for the car to be our UEL headers, these (when combined with a tune) smooth out the dreaded torque dip and add substantial top end power.

Whichever way you go, I recommend getting a tune first of all, our tunes have "upgrade" options at reduced rates should you add any additional modifications to your vehicle such as UEL headers mentioned above.

The tune would ensure better fuel economy, safer running of your engine on our low octane fuel, better and more consistent power, launch control and flat foot shifting.

Please view the links in my signature with regards to tuning/modification options we have available for the GT86.

Maintain the car, service at the correct service intervals, check fluid levels often, get a good tune and you shouldn't have to worry about if its ok to rev her out and drive it like you stole it :w00t:
Just like any other car, try not to "lug" he motor, in other words, change down a gear if you feel it struggling at low RPM, going up a hill for example. These cars are meant to rev!
