Brakes grinding with 12500 miles on car
My brakes are making a grinding noise whenever i press on them. It doesnt make any sense to me though since i dont beat on my car, downshift often to avoid unnecessary wear on the pads, and i only have 12,500 miles on the car! The brakes function normally as in the car stops normally, the pedal doesnt sink in, etc. it's just freakin weird. Could this grinding be caused by dirt between the pad and the rotor? There has been a lot of salt and crap on the ground. Anyone had their pads go this soon?

I doubt that it is your pads. I drove 3 track days and 15000 miles on the stock pads.
Does the grinding go away after a little? In this case its just bc the rotors began to rust (I see you live in NY to) and your basically cleaning them with the pads. Don't worry about it. If the grinding doesn't go away, check them out. Pull off the wheel and you should be able to see how thick the pad is. Maybe you have a defective caliper or maybe you just need pads. You never know with cars. BTW. Don't downshift to save the brakes. A clutch is much more expensive than brakes. |
Lol thx for advice. What if you rev match your downshifts? Then all should b good for clutch and brakes right?
I noticed as i continued to drive, the noise became less noticeable. So it might be the rust. The weather has been real crap here in ny the past month, and my car was sitting around for a week or so, so i wouldnt be surprised! |
I think your problem has been solved. This is typical of a car that has been sitting. I to live in NY. It sucks. Lol.
As for the clutch thing. Rev matching helps but still if ur going to a dead stop I would rather use the cheap pads. Its a driving preference. I am not criticizing just figured I would give you a heads up. |
Brake surface rust is common, it's quite noticeable in these cars compared to others. http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albu...l_IMG_1490.JPGSimilar to this, sounds like you didn't drive the car for a while and the rotors needed to be "cleaned.

Definitely the rust guys. My rotors look exactly like that! And yea lol definitely wont over do it with the downshifting.
I am sick of the ny weather. The snow obviously sucks, the salt and dirt destroy my car. And the potholes are EVERYWHERE. I'm looking to move down south, i think my car will like it much more down there! |
Where are u in NY? I'm in syracuse.

I had an issue with mine where it would make this gawd awful grinding sound when slowing down. Typically very audible at 20mph or less. I only have 15k miles. Mine started after our first snow in Texas and didn't stop. I checked for rust and everything since it did it for about 2 weeks. Took it apart reapplied grease where needed and haven't heard anything since.
