Why is ft86club called ft86?

I have been here since even before I got my FR-S. And I just started wondering wondering why the forum is called ft86? Is it because the FT-1 was announced around the same time? Or am I missing something big. Or was it just what they thought the gt86 would be called?:iono:

One of the first concept cars was named the ft86 which got renamed a few times until it is now the 86. The forum was created back then.

I thought FT-1 was announced in Jan 2014. AFAIK FT is for Future Toyota and the FT86 was the concept car that GT86/FR-S/BRZ were based off.

The very first FT-86 Concept car was revealed late 2009 and the Scion FR-S concept was revealed in April 2011. The "86" and "GT86" names were official on November 29, 2011 when Toyota did a press-style release and the FR-S was official on November 30, 2011 during their public revealing.

So, this forum originated when FT-86 was the only name we knew the car by.

Edit: Yes, FT stands for "Future Toyota" and 86 referred to the AE86, so Toyota had in mind an AE86 successor from the start.

This is how it goes : Toyota 86 in Asia, South Africa, South America and Australia; GT86 in Europe; both of the preceding names in New Zealand; FT86 in Jamaica.

Your welcome.

ToyotaJamaica.com FT-86

BTW, here is the hideous original FT-86 concept:

Then Toyota pulled their collective heads from their asses and revealed the FT-86 Concept II, which was much better and pretty close to what we eventually got:

Looking at that first concept shows you exactly how close we came to getting just another bland Japanese econobox body design.

It is. That first link takes you to the Toyota Jamaica page for the FT-86.

The rest of the photos were just showing the OP (and anyone else who is interested) where the "Future Toyota" part started and how it progressed to what we have now.

I'm looking at the pictures of the Jamaica FT86. They don't have a badge on the trunk. Unlike the GT86 or FR-S.

acro 03-15-2015 01:19 AM

Yup no badge but it's called the ft86 in Jamaica
