Not what I expected.

A few years ago I became obsessed with the seventh generation Celicas and instantly made it my favorite car. Being the lazy, unmotivated person I was, never really took the time to do any research and just stayed stagnantly infatuated with the vehicle. It wasn't until just a few days ago that I found out production had ceased in 2005. I also stumbled across what would be the new 2012 Celica and injured myself in the process of researching it. I was quite disappointed to say the least. The FT-86, as it was called, just didn't fit what a Celica was in my mind. It just seemed completely different than what I had fallen in love with. Of course I understand that there is always change, and that if the seventh generation model needed to cease production, something had to be done. As we all know, the change that the seventh generation brought was huge. But I personally like the older generations and their style. I actually own a '92 myself. First car just had to be a Celica

tl;dr: Like seventh gen' Celicas, but was dissatisfied with the new model.

Some of the issues I have with the FT-86 stem from the front of the vehicle. For one, it seems too short for my liking. The two cars I've always compared in length were the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 6. The 6 topped the 3 simply because of the length. I've never really liked the look of such a compact car. The FT-86 is a few inches shorter than the 3. What I also dislike is the car is the grille. Not so much of a dislike as it is not like as much as I should kind of thing. It just seems like a cross between an Evo and an RX-8. Both of which are amazing cars in their own respect. Two of my favorites, actually. On a positive note: I do like the angle in which the hood sits on the FT-86.

tl;dr: Too short. Front bumper could use a different look.

Now on to the rear of the car. The back of the cabin stretches way too far back. There is no reason this car should look like a hatchback. This is ultimately why I dislike the car. Honestly, if you cut out the very back of the car and just look at the front, it is a beauty. If the back was simply changed so that the cabin came in more, I would definitely find the front bumper much more appealing. That and even changing the angle slightly, making it a wee bit steeper. It's like Kim Kardashian if her ass curved inward. That or Angelina Jolie with no lips. It takes severe points off the aesthetics of the car.

I do like that, on the red FT-86 we've all seen, they kept to the idea of keeping that indentation on the hood, albeit slight. That coupled with the hood scoop is what I feel makes me like the seventh gen' Celly so much. If they just made it ever so slightly deeper or wider, I think it would look much better and have more of that Celica soul in it. Not asking for the scoop, just the indentation.

I've been going back and forth between what I've been writing and the pictures of the car. To be honest, the length actually seems quite nice. Being shorter does reduce the weight of the car. If the back of that car were to be fixed, which it won't be, this could easily become my favorite car. Slightly influenced by its history, of course.

Whaddya' say?

Now THAT looks more like a Celica! Seems like a Mazdica. Celizda even. I'm getting excited just looking at it!

Of course these are just my opinions. I'm sure there are people out there that love the style in the back. I guess it's an acquired taste like bleu cheese. -shutters-

This thread was just made so I can get my thoughts out there and just put my mind at ease. It gave me the time to dissect this car a little and formulate some solutions that will do absolutely nothing.

Lol you do realize that celicas were technically hatchbacks (ie the rear window opens with the boot)
More importantly ft86 is NOT a celica successor

edit
sorry calais :p

OP i can see how you would come to this conclusion about the ft-86 design and aesthetics and how disappointed you are with it. Only because you are looking through a CELICA lens. Just as you would if you looked at this car through a SUPRA lens or Camry lens. It just doesnt add up.

However this car has been stated to be a one up from the Trueno Corolla from the 80s (AE86). So before you make another thread about this car you should do a bit more research, because honestly this first post and first thread makes you look like an idiot.

Celica....Mazda3...Mazda6... Decent cars I suppose, but NONE are -sports- cars. Sporty, yes.... sports cars? Hardly. It's difficult to make a car specifically for performance when the rear wheels (which the weight shifts to under acceleration) receive NO power. Yeah, I know... drastic generalization here (Sorry FWD fanboiz), but you get the picture.

Also, as mentioned previously, FT-86/FT-S is meant to be the old Corolla GTS/AE86 predecessor. It was mentioned briefly that it'd be taking the place of the Celica ONLY because that was the latest model Toyota had that even remotely resembled a sports car. Past them being two-door, 2+2-seater hatches, with a front-mounted engine... there really isn't much in common. It's about as similar to a Celica as it is to a Civic coupe... minus the mad VTEC yo!

Past that, asthetic preference is entirely opinion. I, for one, find the concept beautiful... with exception to the extremely stylized 'concept' interior. Of course, I'm sure there's some StarTrek fans or something out there that LOVE the concept interior... and Kudos to them! Honestly, I'll be happy regardless of how it -looks-, so long as the -performance- that's been promised is there. After all, with -performance- cars, that's kind'a the focus. ;)

Contradiction: Succeed in failing.

It could fit in with the super old school Celicas. Personally I wouldn't freak out if they called it a Celica (as that eventually led to the Celica-Supra and finally the Supra...)

But yeah, the '86' in the title says it all really.

True, First gen Celica did have coupe and hatch. I liked hatch Celica, but coupe Celica still look awesome!

Unless you have cash in hand (and a valid drivers license).
