help with dealer

so a dealership has asked me to put down a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit in case i back out, but claims they will still return the money if there is an emergency or something along those lines. not sure if i should do it. i told them id go in tomorrow and talk to them in person so i could have a print out. the only thing that worries me is if they change the price, or have a really high doc. fee or finance % its $500 to place the order and should have it in a couple of months. its the closest dealer within 400 miles that are still taking orders. what should i do?

The general consensus is that non-refundable deposits are frowned upon. If I were you, I would get all my ducks in a row. Price, doc fee, finance rates, etc. Get them all signed off, then if you're fully committed to buying then you wouldn't need to be worried about getting you're deposit back (because you're buying). Of course, pending all the numbers. If they don't want to discuss any of that with you without a deposit, then skip over them and make a trip to another dealership. Contact a few dealerships with good reputations, get it all by email. Then commit, buy a plane ticket to take delivery, and take the long way home.

yea, gonna go up there and talk to them about getting a guarantee in paper then ill go ahead and put a deposit down. not to worried about the finance part, because if they want to pull some shit then ill just finance through a bank. just worried about extra hidden fees, or last minute mark ups. thanks for the input btw.

I volunteered making a non-refundable deposit because I knew I wanted to buy and my dealership declined. Make of that what you will.
