Help!!!What would you prefer: auto or manual?

Hi guys, Im doing a research study on automatic vs manual transmission and if you can help me answer the survey questions and vote on auto/manual. i appreciate your help.

1. which type is transmission you prefer? and why?
2. If you purchase another vehicle in the future, what type of transmission would you go for?

Ponwh 03-11-2015 06:10 PM

1.manual

It's fun. My first car was a manual. I like being in control of rpms.

2. If. I get a frs, I'd go for manual.
I'd get an auto for everything else

D_Thissen 03-11-2015 06:13 PM

I've driven standard for a number of years and enjoy it. If there was a DSG or dual clutch automatic available, I would have a hard time deciding.

Manual. I'm a control freak. Don't tell me when to shift.

Jesse36m3 03-11-2015 06:32 PM

10 speed.

Bobblehead 03-11-2015 06:38 PM

1 Manual. Why? Because I'm a bit of a control freak. I like to choose what gear my car is in without it kicking down or going into a different gear.

2. Manual. Its what I'm used to and after driving manuals for the better part of the last 2 years, they're just a better fit for me.

Oh god not a CVT ever!
Got no issues with autos but those damned CVTs with their lack of shift points just freak me out.

Turbo95eg6 03-11-2015 07:47 PM

Good lord, there sure have been a lot of threads like these for "research purposes". Here's a tip OP, don't be that guy in class that writes papers about cars...

Chanpion 03-11-2015 07:50 PM

Depends on the car really. There's just cars where the personality fits the transmission or once you exceed a performance figure, I think only a DCT would suffice for me.

Alltezza 03-11-2015 07:56 PM

LOL, this car should have came only in manual like the Civic Si and the STi and in the past, the Nismos. The automatic is slower, and it defeats the whole purpose of this car being fun.

strat61caster 03-11-2015 08:07 PM

This place is filled with wannabe racers and bench racers and actual racers.

The manual will win the poll because of the crowd of people who think the 1 second 0-60 difference will win them a race (it won't if they suck), doesn't mean you should get it.

carma143 03-11-2015 08:07 PM

Why is "manual" italicized? :iono:

Bergen23 03-11-2015 08:10 PM

If driving manual didn't leave my ankle in excruciating pain some days, id have gotten a manual. But, given the pain thing, and a few other factors, auto it was for me.

Hot Lava 03-11-2015 08:11 PM

Manual. Saves $1000 dollars on the cost of the car. With this car you had better be competent with your shifting. The manual doesn't suffer fools lightly.

Ahhhh but the auto gets better mileage (still haven't figured that one out) so over the life of the car you would probably be ahead in costs.

The voting in the first link is by the members of this forum. You have to be an member of the forum to vote the poll.

The question in the first thread = "What will you get? Manual or auto."
Your question = "What would you prefer? Manual or auto."

Very similar. More like same.

daiheadjai 03-11-2015 08:23 PM

Manual for me - it is about engagement. I'm aware that I'm getting slightly worse fuel consumption and nowadays, possibly a slower car (not for the 86, mind you - but many cars are faster with their auto/PDK/DCT versions than the stick)

This is strictly from my social circle, but it seems there is a strong correlation between the ability to drive manual, and one's level of interest in cars. Out of the people in my circle of friends who drive (approx 7 come to mind), only 2 don't really have a strong interest in cars.

Many of my friends who drive automatics prefer the convenience, and don't like/understand the perceived amount of effort/thought it takes to drive a manual transmission.
I say "perceived" because once you've been driving manual transmissions for anything more than a few weeks or months, it really becomes second nature.

Sarlacc 03-11-2015 08:24 PM

I prefer a 7-speed DSG sequential in a Bugatti Veyron, if you're buying.
No? Well, I thought getting the manual 86 was a no brainer until the dealer invited me for a first test drive back in 2012. It was an automatic. I loved it. Tested the manual later, they were both the same price, loved that too, bought the AT. Never regretted it. It's a very, very good little tranny.

The automatic has a different set of gears that give it longer legs, at freeway speeds it turns lower rpms and results in a ~7 seconds 0-60 mph time vs. the ~6 seconds for the manual.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5404

Edit: I would in no way use this as fodder for deciding, drive both, sleep on it, buy whichever one you think will make you happy. I've driven mine in some of the worst traffic in the nation on some of the worst inclines in the nation (SF and LA). The MT has never been a barrier for me, but I totally understand someone not wanting to live with it on a daily basis.

Not if using Murican dollars. Now get back to your oil sands and pump me more of that crude.

dentalprodigy 03-11-2015 08:38 PM

1. Manual. This was my first fun car and I'm glad I jumped on the manual bandwagon. Mundane drives to grocery store are soo much more engaging now.

2. Manual.

ntron1 03-11-2015 08:44 PM

1. which type is transmission you prefer?
Manual and why? Are you Serious?
2. If you purchase another vehicle in the future, what type of transmission would you go for? Again, Are you Serious??

Black Tire 03-11-2015 08:50 PM

1. Manual

2. I have never owned a car that is not a manual, and don't intend to unless it eventually becomes necessary due to family considerations to get a minivan or other grocery getter / family transporter.

Actually, the CVT in the Toyota Corolla I sometimes drive for work does a very good job. You really don't notice it much in normal driving. Have you ever ridden a snowmobile? They all have CVT's.

navanodd 03-11-2015 08:50 PM

Based on what I've read on these forums, I wouldn't bring fuel economy into the decision. I see a lot of people on here beating the manual mileage estimates (not by a lot, but still) and I personally have only ever been able to observe slightly worse than the mileage estimates for the auto. So I don't think the real world fuel economy difference is significant.

I have the auto and sometimes I'm glad and other times I wish I had the manual. I was dealing with buying a leftover 2013 very late in the year so my options were limited. If I could have gotten the limited in WRB with a manual I would have. That said, I find the auto very responsive and drive almost exclusively in manual mode.

richardM 03-11-2015 09:02 PM

1. Manual, because it is just plain more fun to drive. I don't sit in traffic, I take this car out for fun. It' s better and less expensive and it's fun to learn and it's not about going fast, saving gas or any of that. My girlfriend would ask me if I wanted to keep my penis in her purse if I suggested automatic because even my beautiful GF is not such a girl that she would drive automatic.

2. Next car will be Manual because it's more fun. Unless I was making a beater rally car because.. beater. And rally car.

Ya I agree really but still had to throw it into the mix as a "paper spec" since they are actually quite different. I have beat the manual combined mileage "on paper" rate by 4 or 5 mpg since I got the car (mostly highway on cruise)

Though with that said I have never driven a manual car that copes with heavy stop in go traffic so well.

nah I don't know about that I can get 36 to 38 mpg in a manual driving at 70 to 75 on the highway. I average 32 mpg combined

Longer sixth gear and a higher final drive ratio.

ToySub1946 03-11-2015 09:52 PM

Automatic transmissions became available on consumer cars about 1940.

I'm still having trouble getting used to the idea...something I just don't need, same goes for autonomous cars.

There is basically no maintenance required for a manual transmission.

Ya but they did not become truly common until the 60s (not saying there weren't lots). I still call them "standards" to this day and it really confuses the hell out of the youngsters. Them - "Why standard and not manual"?
Me - "Because that was how most cars came and the auto was an option"

I was talking about other automatics I've driven, not the BRZ's automatic (which I have not driven.)

And if I read the OP correctly, it was just for a survey. Cool your jets man, we're all friends here. Mostly.
