Actually, I believe it would be very possible for the AT to beat the MT depending on the skill of the drivers given that the AT will do 60 in 2nd gear and I believe the MT will not. The biggest problem is launch control for the AT.

Dude...I average 22-25. But that's a lot of city, traffic, and lead foot. I tried driving nicely once. 29 mpg. Smiles per gallon was close to 0 though so i decided to go back to 22 MPG and lots of SPG.

Oh and manual all the way.
1. This car only came in manual for my trim
2. I learned to drive stick on it...scary and probably cut the life of my clutch but who cares.
3. It's fun. I'm in bumper to bumper every day and I still love it.

Good for you. Unfortunately, when it gets bad, I have no modulation in my ankle, or when I get to where I'm going, I'm unable to walk because of the pain. Not exactly what I want for a DD that takes me to work. That would be an awkward phone call to my boss "Hey man, I'm out in the parking lot, but I can't get out of my car because my ankle feels like it's broken again. Can I work from my car?"

Have you driven an 86 in manual and Sport mode, or is this just something you want to believe?

Manual with stickier tires and stab/trac off is the way to go.

.

And Moses descended from the mount and bore with him two tablets.
Etched upon these tablets were eleven commandments!

Ahhhh but the auto gets better mileage (still haven't figured that one out) so over the life of the car you would probably be ahead in costs.

Mine doesn't!

ETA: Everyone who has said "manual" seems to have no idea of how the AT can be used.

Mine gets what I'd expect from a small engine in a small car with an auto. Average to about 8.5l/100km with some hooning thrown in

Auto - I have two right feet. Never have been a good at dancing either.

Added bonus is that it allows the missus to drive when I've had too many wobbly pops. No drinking and driving for me.

Ashikabi 03-12-2015 02:33 PM

I vote manual

Many do not seem to understand the way most modern autos work.
Even my wife's Mitsu RVR with the CVT comes alive when I use the paddle shifters. In fact it is the only way I can drive the thing as the CVT coupled to the small engine just bites the big one otherwise. Jump on those paddles though and it is like a radically different vehicle.
I got mine in MT more out of habit then any "MT rules bruuuuh" mentality. Wait until some of you guys have been driving MT for 40 years and you learn that it isn't really "fun" anymore because your body just does it without even any thought. For all I notice my shifting anymore I may as well be driving an AT.

I could very well see myself feeling that way later on in my life, but as of now, I enjoy a manual. Its not just about chosing gears when I want as the auto can do that also. I find making the clutch, shifter, throttle, etc. all work together smoothly myself more enjoyable. I'm sure I won't feel this way about a manual if I ever have kids in the back seat.:barf::cry::mad0259:

Maybe this poll would be more usefull with age ranges?

For this car Auto. I have a tune that lets me spin tires as much as I want. It's
N/A.
It was all that was left on the lot when I bought it. Now I did go in to buy a manual, but this A/T made me a believer. It is smooth, fast and when your dead tired from working all nite it still never goes into full automatic. Just can't do it. Manual mode all the time. I traded my STI in on the BRZ and have not regretted it a single day.
I mod regardless of the car I have and this car, in AT is just way too much fun. But that's me. Everyone is different. Most never give it chance. Check the forums to see who has more issue's, MT or AT.

I've asked our GT86 community in Norway, where most of the members have MT. And I've got the worst gas mileage of all. Not something I'd brag about... but it's interesting.
