And I walked away.....
Had to replace my 2013 FR-S... May she R.I.P.
Bought it Jan 23, 2013 and put 50,2xx miles on her and loved every one of them. I would like to thank Toyota/Subaru for making such a fun/safe car!! I was enjoying my monthly HPDE instruction but got a little complacent. Conditions were dry, 55 degrees F and overcast, car was making better HP than normal but the grip on track was lacking. First session I spent hunting for grip and sliding through most corners, always fun but tough on tires...The reason I say I was complacent is apparent in the following video from the first session (1:11 on the lap timer I make the comment "This is getting too easy"): [ame="http://youtu.be/_jqA0jm94oA"]http://youtu.be/_jqA0jm94oA[/ame] While taking a break after my first session I checked the weather forecast and saw that conditions would not be changing. I decided to go back out and work on my heel/toe technique, a few laps in I realized I was lifting while going through turn 6 which I normally do for the first few laps of the day while getting heat in the tires but usually will be WOT through that corner at about 97 mph with no issues. Next lap I kept WOT through the corner with no issues, data shows about 101 mph. And then the next lap... When I entered turn 6, the back stepped out starting CW rotation, I overcorrected started CCW, started correcting again and started CW again as I exited the track. When the car was sideways, the left rear tire dug in and caused the car to flip.... then I woke up... Spent a couple of minutes gathering my senses and looking for my phone to call for assistance, no luck on the phone. Tried drivers door but the fender prevented opening it more than about a foot, so I slid out the "Emergency Exit" (back window). Walked away with a black eye, presumably from airbag knocking my glasses off, nice bruise/abrasion from seatbelt across my shoulder, and some airbag rash on my arm... (I can't say enough about the safety of this car!!!) ER visit resulted in a Tylenol 3 prescription after having chest x-rays and an MRI...They said no concussion. Edit: Thanks @Chanpion for the program suggestion!! I was able to view the video finally!! As you can see, I was happy with my first color choice.... This one is now in my driveway waiting to get out there. :burnrubber: And yes I know I am one lucky SOB and will be taking it easy for a bit... http://www.ft86club.com/forums/pictu...pictureid=8999 |

For the video recovery, if you think your video is worth 30 Euros, try this: http://grauonline.de/cms2/?page_id=5
If you do decide to buy it, run the trail software on it first and see if that works first. The trial works for saving 50% of the video. Unfortunately, I haven't run into anything free yet but vouch for this piece of software, saved some client footage before. If I do find a free & reliable piece of software if the future, I'll post it. If you want a quick technical on how it works: Video needs a "start" marker and a "end" marker for it to work. In your case, it seems like your "end" marker didn't write properly, duh, and that's exactly how this program fixes video. It just pseudo writes a end marker where your video ends so you can view it. Props up to your safety by the way. I've always been worried about the roll over protection for the driver/ passenger. EDIT: Glad you saved the footy! |
That'll buff out

Think its totalled? ....no but seriously it may be covered under warranty. Glad you're ok

Thank you very much, just viewed the video, I wish the phone had stayed with the car a little longer... The video stops during the first roll when the car is upside down... I'm going to try and edit it down a bit before posting as it covers about 6 laps before the flip and is a bit choppy... Thanks again!! |

Once you go toe to toe with another driver competitively though, all bets are usually off. OP - congrats on the new ride. Glad you made it out of the old one relatively unscathed. Feel better knowing she died doing what she loved. Question - why do you seem to have been running a mixed set of tires based on your pics? Hankooks and Michelins? :burnrubber: |
