That looks rediculously fun
That looks like a ridiculous amount of fun. First time I've been jelly of our northern neighbors during this snowy winter!
That is the Shizznite
That's something I've always wanted to do. Don't think I'll get the chance in Alabama - at least not until the next Ice Age :D
Looks like an absolute blast - thanks for sharing the pics and vid! |
I'd be terrified of doing that, but also be enjoying it at the same time.
A friend of mine used to do ice driving instruction. I wonder if he still does...
that looked crazy fun!
It was slightly terrifying because although you couldn't really do any major damage to your car, there was always the possibility that you could tear off a lip or perhaps an entire bumper if you spun into the snow quickly enough. Which was why I was apprehensive about just always solving understeer with throttle because the ice was so slick often times you'd still just slide wide, lol.
Please tell me you were on stock Primacy's, and how they worked just fine. ;)
J/K Looks like a blast, but I'd prefer to have earth under my car at all times! |
Btw, did you pedal dance before hitting the course?
How the hell did you car stay clean??
Looks like fun! Were you on studded tires or just bare rubber snows? I agree with @srizzors25 its too bad they only allow 4wd/awd at Georgetown.
No pedal dance. Just normal 3-second-hold to turn off the aids. It wasn't uncommon for the TCS to still kick in at extreme angles or when your wheels were REALLY spinning like crazy, but it was never obtrusive. If anything the light would flash a bit, and you could hear and feel the system doing SOMETHING but it's not like with the aids on where you hit a brick wall in performance. In fact, it was so subtle I couldn't really tell what it was doing. I think if anything it was just braking the rear wheels slightly to try to control SOME of the extreme wheelspin, but it doesn't completely step in and cut power. It's more like, "OK, WE'RE ONLY GOING 10 MPH AND WE'RE COMPLETELY SIDEWAYS. HOW ABOUT WE LIMIT OURSELVES TO ONLY, I DUNNO, 6K RPM???" Lol.
As far as how the car stayed so clean, remember there is no salt on the lake, lol. So it's just dry, frozen ice, and a little bit of snow on the track. Clean snow. There is nothing to get the car dirty! I was on General Altimax Arctic 205 section tires on 16" steelies. They are studdable tires, but I didn't have any studs in. With studs my car would have acted more like it was on dry pavement. The cars with studs were flying around like nobody's business, throwing up massive rooster tails in the process. |
So fun!!

Love the music. Great vid!
To all those peeps who say this car is undriveable in the winter: SUCK IT. |
Another ice racing BRZ!!!! Your awesome. My group races door to door. I didn't use the BRZ this year cause it's getting a roll cage at the moment.

Oh man!
Am jealous! Looks soooo fun. In Asia, we have no frozen lakes, no winter, no fun. Love the soundtrack on the vid by the way! |
That looks like a blast. Great way to practice car control.
pretty cool. thanks for posting. love the pictures
Looks like a ton of fun.
Also wanted to say hi from Jalopnik, I was talking to you about a month ago over there about BRZ in the winter months and how I was waiting for winter to be over before I ordered mine. I go by the tag "Emerald" over there. Cool to see you here too. |
Haha sweet! I plan on posting pretty much this exact thread to Oppo sometime tonight. Gotta finish my baby's first-ever oil change first tho :P

As an update to our discussion like a month ago though, I was in one of the dealerships in my area today. They did a search, and sadly, there aren't any Series.Blues left in my area at all. But they are seeing what they can do price wise to get me into a limited all the ground effects options and the wheels. I will miss out on the blue interior, but hey... that's what I get for waiting I guess. |
Ahhh, that sucks, but hey, think of it this way: Now you don't have to pay extra just for some blue pleather :P
Well the problem is that the limited plus the wheels, lip, skirts, splitter, and underbody panels is actually slightly more than the series.blue it seems.
I guess it's safe to assume the brakes didn't overheat
Great pics. |
Not gonna lie... That looks fun as hell.
It was so much fun! And no, the brakes didn't overheat, haha. The ABS unit might have tho, lol.
Hell yeah! Nice pic!
Ditto, nice pic. I like the gold rims with the red car, looks good. Good sized front mount too, what FI are you running?
very cool, i always wanted to do this.
also as someone who previously worked on ice a lot, you want to hear the ice crack, means that its thick enough to handle the weight of the vehicle, ice makes little to no noise once it gives way and you sink in. trust me when i say you don't want to find this out first hand. |
