Starting issue

About half of the time my car takes a long time to turn over, sometimes as many as 10 cranks (rare), but notably longer than normal about half the time.

Had this happened with anyone else?

Sigh-on-Rice 06-11-2012 03:59 AM

I probably started the car about 20 times so far, but this never happened.

FakeWhiteMan 06-11-2012 07:30 AM

Not mine. It turns over 2-3 times before it fires up...

This.

Ill man up and admit the only time it's taking longer than 3 was during practice doing hill starts in manual gearbox. I left and drove around to recharge the battery

MVJ1975 06-11-2012 09:12 AM

No starting issues with mine.

Hawaiian 06-11-2012 11:06 AM

I guess I'll take it in to the shop. I just didn't want to be "that guy" who's in every other week. I was in last week because I found a scratch that was there on delivery that they fixed.

sastexan 06-11-2012 11:50 PM

Interesting. I assumed the car would have an automatic starter (the computer cranks the car once you turn the key to the start position) since the Subaru (and 86) have the push button start option. On my Odyssey, I just flick the key and the computer does the starting for me (even though there is no push button start option) and on the contrary, you cannot engage the starter once the car is running.

Anyone tried to just flick the key and see if it starts?

Jayp 06-12-2012 01:45 AM

Maybe it's your engine immobilizer. If the car doesn't recognize the microchip from your key, it'll just keep cranking until the microchip is nearby.

xjohnx 01-31-2013 05:14 PM

sorry to bring up an old post, but the only 2 times i've experienced this my car was parked on an incline. are any of you guys parked on an incline when experiencing the issue?

Mr.Jay 01-31-2013 05:18 PM

Yeah same here, the engine was not happy with me spinning out and stalling, plus this was an AT :)

jaynutter2 01-31-2013 05:36 PM

My did take a few extra cranks once, but that was it. Hasn't happened again.

djmodernroq 01-31-2013 05:40 PM

Mine did it twice after a week i had it and never happened again. Knock on wood!

tnt 01-31-2013 05:41 PM

nope

Cade01 01-31-2013 05:58 PM

Mine does it from time to time.

stevemp5 01-31-2013 07:21 PM

mine do that when my gas tank is almost empty...

#87 01-31-2013 07:36 PM

Has happened once but was about 20 F outside and I turned the key real fast, I usually pause for a brief second in the accessory on position before starting.

What really? Never thought the AT would do that as well.

Either way I hope someone figures this out or at least it never happens to me again

mact 01-31-2013 07:47 PM

I had one long crank, about 5 seconds once. Never happend again though.

#87 01-31-2013 07:54 PM

I spun once but it started right up, no long crank

How do you stall an AT?

#87 01-31-2013 08:16 PM

I stalled an AT once by accidentally knocking the shifter into reverse while in forward motion ^_^

Yes this happened to me 5 times since I've owned the BRZ. It happens like about once a month..hot/cold weather. Lol I think I asked you this the first time we met at the autox (Joilet raceway) ... assuming you are the person I think you are...Im the guy with the black BRZ.

cevin45x 08-06-2013 04:49 PM

.....I didn't want to bring it in to the dealship cuz I know they wouldn't be able to reproduce it.

That's me. It hasn't happened in a long time for me. I'm up to 30k miles now however.

cevin45x 08-07-2013 12:45 AM

That's good to hear. It hasn't happened to me in awhile but honestly I haven't been driving it much, I'm on 12k. Crossing my fingers that it stopped

Ugh, I missed lasts autox and will be missing the one in Sept since I'm outta of the country right now for business... But should be back for the back to back weekend in Oct... guess I'll check the posted times anyways :)

That feature you are referring to is tip-start, and I don't believe the FR-S has that, but its funny my brothers Dodge Dart 1.4 has that and one early morning all I heard was a straight turn over for 10 secs and it just stopped  second try it was fine. But I think its a normal feature for push-button ignition cars.

Hard J-turns lol when I was younger with my parent's cars I would forgot to knock it down into neutral or would drop it into drive too quickly.

Jose_Timberlake 08-08-2013 12:21 PM

This actually happened to me for the 1st time yesterday after work. It was pretty warm out (about 85 degrees) and it took a few seconds longer than usual to fire up. I went ahead and shut it off, and when I tried again it fired right up as it normally would. I've got the Push Start so not sure if that would make any difference...got under 200 miles so I'll continue to monitor it.

MyGT86 08-14-2013 06:18 PM

Happened once after I had stalled while parked just not paying attention to being in gear =( . Started after like 10 or so cranks left it idle for 10 mins shut it down restarted fine hasn't happened again since. This engine doesn't like to be stalled apparently.

Leonardo 08-14-2013 07:20 PM

Last winter, it had snowed and I had been driving my truck for a few weeks. When I went to start the FR-S, it wouldn't. I was very disappointed. I almost killed the battery. I went in my house disgusted with my new car. I told my wife, who went out and it started right up. This has only happened the one time it sat for weeks. FYI: I use premium no ethanol gas ALWAYS!

The_Societan 08-15-2013 08:40 AM

You are correct, the FR-S doesn't have "tip start", if that's what it's called. My Yaris does, and when I got the FR-S it took me a couple weeks to get used to actually keeping the key turned to get it started. I felt like people who were nearby thought the car had trouble starting or something...
