Car Totalled From A Fender Bender?!

A guy broadsided my passenger side in a 25mph zone and hit the fender in front of the tire. He hit just right so that the bumper cover, fender, and hood folded in a fair bit.

The estimate for repairs jumped from $3,000 to $16,000+ because the fuse box cracked. They're saying you can't just replace the fuse box and that you have to replace the engine harness, which requires pulling out the dash.

This seems ridiculous to me, but I'm not an expert on newer cars. Can anyone confirm this?

This is all I have for pictures, I imagine I'll be dropping by this week/weekend.

Do you have pictures of the damage to the fuse box/wiring

i suggest calling a couple dealers (toyota and subaru) and seeing if they agree with that. also if its not the case and the buy back is cheap, let them total out, buy car back, fix for cheap and spend extra money on mods.

Lol why be upset, you get a new car now. Most people come on here saying, is it totaled? Please let it be totaled, my car will never be the same now. Plus no more atrocious blue interior.

Updated original post with a picture. I don't have more at the moment, but I'll probably be seeing the car in the next few days.

I'll try calling a few more dealerships, the original one that I tried sent me away because they "don't deal with stuff like this".

I'm not upset, just shocked. I'd prefer to have a new car, especially if the repairs are going to be this invasive. Even if the absurd amount of wiring went off without a hitch, I'm certain there would be annoying rattles and what not from most of the interior being pulled out.

And that interior isn't atrocious.

Fuse box is probably a red herring, sounds like the frame got tweaked.

There's lots of stuff that's top dollar in that area, sure some harness could need replacing, maybe the A/C got damaged, suspension/steering. All told if all of those got banged up enough the parts and labor racks up pretty quick I could agree to $16k.

My money is still on chassis damage.

I guess the side impact could've caused frame damage... but where it got hit looks like it's at the crash beams. Just not sure how the crash beams do in side impact. They work wonders in front impact!!

your getting taken for a ride. no way that a plug and play harness costs that much. lets say they charge 150$ an hour, that means its going to take them 106 hours to replace a plug and play harness? seems legit..

Just doing my part to help your car hold some value!

6 months, 2 weeks, and 18,000 miles. Her life was short, but wrought with adventure.

Turbo95eg6 02-24-2015 05:10 PM

How many miles on it? Sign the papers now, get a new car.

Catchpole 02-24-2015 05:19 PM

I'm sitting at 17,7XX miles I think. I'm definitely not going to fight to keep the car, I was just shocked at how such a lame accident was apparently catastrophic.
