Dead battery
 

So, as I do not wish to run my new car in the snow, and more importantly the Salt just yet. She has been chilling it in the garage under the car cover for the last few weeks. I'm hoping for a warm spell and some rain to wash the salt off the roads, then I may sneak her out some.

But I needed to get something out of the trunk, so I peeled the cover back and opened the door. To my surprise the light didn't come on. Battery dead. So dead that the internal breaker on my battery charger kicks when I try to charge it. I was able to get the batt to come back to life with a Jump and charge. It is now on a battery tender, and states that it is ok. Guess I will find out when I try to start it.

Anyone else have issues with a dead battery. I'm thinking that it may have went bad. and no lights or battery draining stuff left on, I checked, everything unplugged except factory stuff.

Details 2013 BRZ, 12k miles, drove it 3 weeks ago, in heated garage under a car cover.

3 weeks is easily long enough to kill the battery...

I think I've kept mine stored for 3 weeks before, without driving it or turning it on.

It lasted, but I guess thats probably because the battery (and car) was basically brand new. I was worried about it dying too though lol.

I highly doubt that the battery would drain to 5 volts in 3 weeks, as my other car sat for 6 weeks in the summer and started right up. 6 year old battery too.

Depends on the car. If you have the proximity key it will drain the battery. If you accidently popped the trunk, it will quickly kill the battery.


It's also during the summer vs the winter.

I figured it was mainly due to car being 2 years old + OP being frozen in Pittsburgh.

I'll accept the key part. Trunk was closed and latched, all lights off. It is in a heated garage under a cover (constant 50+ Degrees)

Perhaps I will be installing a Heavy duty solenoid to disconnect the battery when I park it for the winter.

Just surprised no one else chimed in, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who winters the car.

our oem battery does suck in the cold. It happens a lot. Myself and two other people I know had the same issue. You can use warranty. But I don't have warranty :P

If you measure the parasitic drain you will see a very high # like 180 mA. Combine this with a less than average OEM battery and you get dead batteries. I complained to Subaru and they bought me a Shorai Lithium battery.

If you've ever let the stock Panasonic drain once, it may not be holding a sufficient charge anymore. A few of us reported similar stories over the years and after replacing the battery with an aftermarket, no more problems. I went with the Optima Yellow Top.

I would look into it. I live in Syracuse NY and can promise you that the weather here is MUCH WORSE seeing as we have hardly hit double digits in the past 4 weeks. My car is stored in a non-heated garage and I try to start it once a month. It fires up every time with only a little hesitation. My car is 2 years old with 22k miles.

I'm facing the same issue. What did you do exactly to get the battery replaced? Also, was it under the 3 yr full warranty or 5 yr powertrain warranty?
