Please help me decide 2014 vs 2015

I am currently shopping in Canada for a BRZ in Sport Tech trim (Limited for US)

I had my mind set for a new 2015 but the dealer I visited has a 2014 demo that he is willing so sell. This dark grey BRZ has a few minor upgrades: A window tint, trunk mat and chrome side thingies. It has done 10000km (about 6200 miles) and is mint as far as I can tell.

The price difference between the '14 and just ordering a new one is approximately $3000.

I did some searching and as far as I know the difference between the two are:
  • Larger exhaust tips
  • Shark fin antenna
  • Carbon-look dash material
  • Nicer Key fob **
  • Suspension tweak
  • Console kneepads (series blue only?)
And in this case:
  • 6200 miles
  • 1 model year
  • Immediate availability

** Is the keyless entry different? Does the '14 have proximity sensor or do I have to use the remote button to open the doors?

Am I missing something?

Here's a pic of the demo:

I would want more off. It's essentially a used car and you could haggle down the dealer to further narrow the gap in prices. There's no way I'd buy a used car for only 3k less than a new one. If he's willing to drop the price a few more grand then I'd consider it.

Get a 2015.

BTW, the dealership tried to sell me a 2 yr old Limited with 30k on it for 21,995. I laughed in their faces. Complete with several inches of leather missing from the steering wheel and a clutch that felt like horseshit..

iSnack0nEmoKidz 02-21-2015 12:19 PM

Eh... Get a new one. 6200 mi for a demo? That means its been driven and seen by like 300 different people or so! But if you want it, knock it down like another 3-4k but when haggling devalue the car!

Get 2015 and have longer warranty and you don't need to worry if it was abused. The shark fin, key fob, larger exhaust tips and carbon fiber style dash are all nice addition too. I believe the tail light is fixed in 2015 model

Way too many miles and demo miles are bad miles. Avoid the hassle and future headaches as these cars already come with a few.

who knows what has gone on with the use one...go new

I am pretty sure it was the daily driver of the sales manager. He butted in when I was talking to the sales rep. and told me about the window tint and chrome strip. I noticed that the sales guy was slightly annoyed but he kept his cool.
All in all the sales rep did an excellent job considering the fact that I (like most if us) do a lot of hime work and probably know more about the car then he did. The manager I did not like. Too cocky.

What future headaches specifically do you mean?

I doubt it had many test pilots because they don't sell many in my neck of the woods. As a matter of fact it was the first time I saw one live (apart from an occasional far away drive by sighting. I do prefer new, but if I can't manage the $ I will try and haggle.

What tail light problem? I am reading like crazy here but haven;t seen it mentioned yet.

BRZBlack 02-21-2015 01:39 PM

He is referring to the tendency of the tail lights ('13 and '14) getting condensation. Something about crappy seals behind the housing. Forum search should bring up multiple threads. It can be fixed pretty easily though.

Usually loaner cars are not well cared for as compared to the care an owner such as yourself would provide. These cars have been known to have their issues, from the dreaded Traction and CEL, the idle dip, crickets... and many more. I for one bought an S2000 back in the days, demo drive as well, and it turned out the clutch was burnt and ended up with first gear popping out. Long story short, they try to pin it on me. I guess my point is when they're selling you a car they'll tell you its all peachy and his un born daughter drove it, but it could be a lie and well i think you don't want to take that chance. Just my advice, not for 3k. :iono: Plus if you're buying it new mind as well get the latest, i understand if it were a 13' and '14 but as you said yourself there are a few little perks with the '15 I'm not aware of. Then again it seems to me based on your replies to others that you're liking this '14, if thats the case then go for it in the long run its you who will enjoy it or deal with its issues.

Having driven one of each, the 2015 definitely rides nicer.

Is that used one the color you want, or are you settling? If you're buying a new car, get the color you want! The other "bonus" parts of the 2015 are worth it as well IMHO (though I also went with a Series.Blue as it already had the mods I had on the list)

Ultimately it's your call, but don't go paying sticker for new either...

Guru Woodman 02-21-2015 02:37 PM

Thanks for the heads up, BRZBlack. I do use the search feature a lot although I am sometimes not impressed with the results.

(I :lol:at the unborn daughter) True that. And even a CarFax or CarProof report won't reveal much if anything (like damage or collisions) because they will keep everything in house.

Then there is the simple fact that I am a serious car nut, which means that my motivation triggers are totally different then your average Joe. Things that wouldn't worry a soul could have me bummed out for weeks. Hell, even shopping for a BRZ keeps me awake at night.

See, I didn't know that a '15 would be a better ride. The suspension setup is different as far as I know, but that would not account for a nicer ride.

As for color I am still a bit on the fence. White was my initial choice but seeing DGM I must say I like it a lot. If I go for a '15 white I get the new Crystal White Pearl too, which is nice although all colors are technically new to me.

Not paying sticker is usually a bit of a challenge where I live. Canada has a lot less competition and people are to polite to haggle lol. And as far as I know, new vehicles don't have too much room to play $ wise.

How much off sticker can I expect within reason? I read a lot of stories about people getting crazy deals, but this is the internet so it might not always be completely true. :bs:

My scenario is that I pay cash and I don't have a trade.

That's exactly what I mean, I'm the same way and the thought of having something go wrong and wondering if it's due to the slight usage of the car could deprive me of sleep lol. There's nothing better than knowing you and you alone have touched your car in any way, this is starting to sound like I'm talking about something else though, I promise I'm not. Lol. Anyways best of luck man and lost some pics of which ever ride you get. The frs/brz is an awesome car and I couldn't be happier.
