Taking FR-S delivery at port of Newark?
I have always wanted to pick up my first brand new car at the factory or in this case at the shipping port. I happen to live within an hour of the port of Newark where the NYK ship 'The Andromeda Leader' docks and unloads all the Toyota's Lexus and Scion cars for inspection and distribution to dealerships from Maine to Virginia.
Anyway my question is, if anyone knows, how would I arrange this? I know it can be done I just don't know how. It also won't be until June for a 2016 MY. Thats when I should have the money saved up. Thanks for any info! |
asking dealer?

I would imagine it needs to be inspected by the dealership beforehand. What stops you from damaging the car then saying "it was like that when I got it"? I also don't think any of the dealership staff are particularly interested in driving an hour to the port with you.
Or maybe they are. What do I know, I'm just a guy on the internet. |

Unless they perform the PMI at the docks, and I doubt they do, you're pretty much stuck at getting it from the dealer. What's the closest dealer to the dock?

As a Customs House Broker and Freight Forwarder, I can pretty much tell you there's no way this will ever happen. At least not with a new car. The only way you can pick up a car directly at the port would be if you personally shipped the car from overseas on a ro-ro vessel, arranged for the customs clearance and DOT filing at the port of entry, a process that can be a lot more troublesome that most people realize. When a company like Toyota or any manufacturer imports cars, they are bulk clearances for an entire lot. They are then responsible to move the cars to an inland dealer. You can not just pull one car and arrange to have a customer pick-up at the port. It just doesn't work like that. Either way, trust me, there's nothing glamours about it. Back in the late 90s, I moved overseas and had my private car (a VW GTI) shipped to Bremerhaven. It arrives filthy dirty, covered in a thin layer of salt residue. |
worked at a dealership for a short while couple years ago, I doubt they'll let you do this. as soon as we receive cars, they go straight to our detailing shop get completely checked over and cleaned before delivery.

OP! show us what you can do and be a first to person to make this happen!! J/K
just pick it up from a dealer. dealer is not going to destroy your brand new car |
Well i know the car will be fine picking it up at the dealer, just wanted to always do this, no biggie. Just a fun idea..

id totally do this if it was possible. the thing that scared me is that they bring it to the 'detailing shop' lol.

A little more about the facility can be found here. http://www.fapsinc.com/ Drove my wife nutz tracking my RS1 shipment last year. I don't think they are setup for customer inquiries let alone customer deliveries. Factory tour during your car assembly and pickup in Japan for later delivery in the US would be REALLY choice!
