FI+ shorter final drive

I believe this is my first thread...

Anyway, had the idea for a while now, what if you were to install say a 4.44FD along with some form of forced induction making around 280whp?

Overkill, wheelspin? What do you all think

Build one and let us know how that goes

I think you should get a car first.

HUNTERANGEL121 02-08-2015 05:51 PM

Have a car, just not an 86 lol...
I was just toying with the idea :)

You can certainly raise the FD with boost. Going real drastic wouldn't be a good idea as you would go through the Rev range to fast and the turbo would just be along for the ride. The concept of lower the FD for boost general revolves around cars built for highway pulls. In that case longer time in gears is what you want.

I absolutely want to change to a 4.44 in my turbo car.

This has been on my mind a lot as I contemplate between the two. Being primarily a DD/Canyon Carver, I don't need anything super fast, but being quick would be nice. I think a higher FD and being FI could make it a very quick car. Be it turbo or Supercharger.

I have a Jackson Racing SC making around 280whp. On stock tires, you'll get wheelspin in first and second gear. I actually have to be careful with merging onto the highway. Third and fourth still pull respectably. I'm happy with the acceleration at this power level and I haven't felt any need to go for shorter gearing. I also do a lot of highway miles so a shorter FD would just mean I'm cruising at a higher rpm in 6th.

Have you considered which FI you want? A supercharger is like having more engine, while a turbo will give you more of a kick in the back in terms of acceleration. Either way, I'd say install the kit first, get through the honeymoon phase (caution: this might take a long time), then see if you want shorter gearing.

The day if I buy an 86... An sc would be put on it...
For now, I fantasize over it on assetto corsa.

So you are just here for the stories and the fun or what?

protpibe 02-09-2015 02:40 PM

For me, it would be either FI -or- a shorter final drive. I can't imagine what 1st and 2nd gear would be like using a short final drive + 300+whp.

mrk1 02-09-2015 02:47 PM

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th , reverse what gear it doesn't matter what your form of boost or gearing is going to "make those gears" Your foot governs everything, plenty of cars will smoke the tires though the low gears, all you have to do is not drive like a caveman.

Pretty much. I've been reading up on the car for a while now, finally made an account.

mkivsoopra 02-09-2015 07:00 PM

I get wheelspin through 3rd gear at ~350 whp. Shorter gears would be useless.

mrk1 02-09-2015 07:29 PM

I want to change to a 4.44 because to me shorter gears are wicked fun, more shifting is more fun to me. Leaving the car in one gear is dull.

Wheel spin can be cured with tires, alignment settings, and traction control known as your right foot. Spinning helps nothing other then bar stool bragging so why not do what you can to prevent it.
