Are these OEM Brake Disks?

So while me and my friend were having a good ol' debate whose BRZ was better (after a passerby commented on my car and not his yet again :laughabove:) I noticed that the brake discs on my BRZ were grooved. I took a look at his to find that they were not grooved or drilled.

He swears that the grooved discs are OEM on manual BRZs (he has an automatic). I'm not so sure.

I bought mine used by the way.

Your OEM Subaru rotors are vented discs, nothing else.

Slotted are aftermarket for such a low-end car.

Not only are they aftermarket they are crappy aftermarket by what I can see in the pic.

Why do they look crappy? Is it because of the rust or that they aren't large enough?

Edit: I have yet to find any noticeable brake pad dust, although so far it has only been a daily.

Like I said from what I can see in the picture (reality may be different) the slots look poorly machined, the hat looks like it had a coating on it but is rusting already (unless that is just brake dust over the coating) and there is quite a bit of wear already on the face. How many miles on your car?
The size looks about right.

I've put alot of miles on it. The mileage is around 55k. Would cleaning it with some sort of micro-fiber benefit it in any way or just hurt it?

OK that makes a difference!
The wear is about right and the rust is probably just dust.
I should have asked mileage before I worried you, sorry!
Where I work we make over a million rotors a year so I have seen a few.

If you want to just clean them up a good wire brush is all you need. Won't make them better or worse they would just look nicer.

N1rve 02-07-2015 02:36 AM

They are not OEM.

Maybe a thin layer of high temp clear or black on the non friction/wear surface to keep it neat?

Yep. Although the coatings we use are not actually "paint" but more paint "like" some good high temp paint on the hat would work fine. Don't paint the wheel or hub mount faces though as pail can bake in glue them right on.

How about high temp paint on the hat and on the wheel mating surface a good cleaning and a thin layer of anti seize?
