The old saying "Not a pot to piss in" came form the fact that the tanners (leather manufacturers) used to use feces & urine to tan leather.
So every morning, the people would take the chamber pots to the tanner's and "sell the piss".
So the people who were REALLY poor didnt even have a pot to piss in, so they couldnt get their $$ for trading it in.
