JDL 4854mfs single scroll kit install/review

I'm doing the install my self and the lack of step by step instructions may have caused me to do some odd things but overall I'm extremely happy with how things are going and the quality of every nut and bolt in this kit. I opted for the titanium coating and their fan shroud to accommodate the spals.

The quality and design of the kit really allows for a beginner to install it. Everything comes in what i would call an exceptionally well packed boxes. Every part is wrapped with its corresponding screws, gasket and nuts.. nut a sack of nuts and another of gaskets leaving you to guess.. The shroud came assembled with the fans(which reminds me i have to tighten, just in case). The shroud has a rubber lip around the borders to seal with the radiator. It has mounting solution just as oem. The spa fans come with some connectors which don't plug and play so you have to splice.. not a biggie. I'll get to the pics. :happyanim:

Any questions you may have, ask away.. I had tons of questions and fortunately Ronnie and the rest of the crew @ JDL were there to help. Word of advise, just gather everything you think you may need and not need, clips, T's, washers... extra hoses..

Overall i'm extremely happy with the kit.. all the clamps, hoses, fittings and even down to the last bolt these things are all top notch, grade A. Oil drain line is fire sleeved as is the wastage line.. everything.

Believe it or not, nothing touches, rubs or scrapes not sure if just in-law's cutting skills or the craftmaship of these guys is just awesome..

Cutting the beam is fairly easy, just measure, mark and cut! too me longer to screw the oil drain line in.

BOV mouting location, i think this is JDL's current default setup.. My cars just dirty but nothing hits or rubs.

Subbed.... I'm in between getting this kit or the FBM kit. Good luck with the install.

Thanks man. I'll keep you all posted. Should have more pics tomorrow of the oil lines, downpipe...and pretty much the finished product.

JDL does really good HQ work :)

Flashed the car today and started as if it were turbo all its life.. couldn't be happier.. the installation went great, not an oz of oil anywhere, fingers crossed. Still tweaking the tune but it feels great. 8psi isn't much but the car moves very nicely and the dump tube, well lets just say its too damn loud lol. I'll see if i could weld that thing back in there or something or maybe in the future get another dp from jdl with wastegate tube routed in. Maybe once i go full 3" this way they could also get the proper 3" on the DP exit as i now have 2.5" to mate to my exhaust.

I'll continue to update my experience and reliability of all the components.

The air filter only slightly touches the ABS unit.. nothing else, pretty neat.

Sometimes i worry the oil is circulating from how clean it looks.

Looks good man. You using a MBC, Electronic or just waste gate?

yomny 01-31-2015 08:46 PM

Going off the wastegate only. Thanks man.

jflogerzi 02-01-2015 12:52 AM

Man i love jdls build quality

yomny 02-01-2015 09:14 AM

It's solid man, even my father saw it and said, "that looks oem". I'm extremely happy. I'm sure most companies do quality work but I could honestly say if I had the chance to do it again Ill get the same thing, just recirculate the wastegate but then again that's a personal thing because lot of guys love that. That fan shroud kit they developed fits like a glove.

I plan on buying a turbo in the near future and the JDL uel kit is at the top of my list, so i have a few question.

What was not included in the kit that you needed to get?
You don't have a oil cooler right?
How's your oil/water temp after hard driving?
Did you buy any additional part for your build(ie radiator, catch cans, coolers, turbo timer)?
What was the worst part of the install?

Thanks,
David

A tune.

You don't have a oil cooler right? Nope, looking for one that fits right, JDL says anything with a mocal plate adapter will clear the turbo.

How's your oil/water temp after hard driving? The most I've hit is 95c water 105c oil but it was a cool day around 70F.

Did you buy any additional part for your build(ie radiator, catch cans, coolers, turbo timer)?
I got a catch can to catch the oil, supposedly once you're force fed more blow by gets by so took advantage that parts were out to get it done.

What was the worst part of the install? Installing the oil pan, it's just messy, that liquid gasket is messy but that's to mention something honestly it was a lot easier than I thought. Installing the bumper is not hard but you need to take it slow and make sure everything is properly aligned.

If you love dumping the wategate then you'll love it but if you're not sure get the wastegate recirculate option. It'll make everything sound cleaner and it won't sound like a bat out of hell is passing by.

ok cool. notching the crash bar wasnt too bad i assume? I'm more worried about the heat issue, all though i do live in mass.
what catch can do u have?
who did your tune? ive always been told moto-east is the way to go.
and what catch can do you have?

sry for all the questions but thanks for all the help

Ask away man, i wish i had someone with the same or similar setup when i was going through all this..'

The crash beam is cake.. as long as you have something to cut metal, those rotary tools will be just fine.

The heat issue isn't an issue.. i got the titanium coating and all though im planning on getting an oil cooler my temps are less than 10 degress apart from when i was NA. You could get the turbo blanket and some sort of coating and you'll be good, their fans with shroud work great.

I'm using the Full blown motorsports catch can.. I got it because the price was right.. just like any other custom made catch can... and it vents both lines, the PCV valve and the line running to the intake leaving the car coompletely clean, check out my fourth or fith pic on the original post.. you could see it mounted by the battery.

I'm tuned with Moto..he had tuned a JDL kit and wrote a pretty good article about it, and to be honest.. he's right on the money. I got the base file, and the car started right up, no lie better than stock. Drove perfectly!! then did a few logs, he got the AFR in check and i'm good.. his custom tunes allow for a range of boost levels so you're not stuck on 7psi for example.. i could do 7-12psi with the map, the ecu will compensate.
