Just an interesting "cold air intake" comparison.... ;-)
This is for NA engines.

This is an awesome thread. Almost makes me glad I had to wait a couple of years to get my BRZ. So much research has been done now that it will make it easier for guys like me to chose the right path for modifications.

True! Had my 86 for 2 years now, but still stock... Now I'm slowly starting to decide on the mods I want. Just soooo much info around!

Exactly. After what has been learned so far and shared here, I now know that my BRZ will be a tune only car with a drop in filter for performance mods :)

If I install a TRD intake would I need a tune? If so would Ecutek be the way to go or does Haltech do ECU tunes as well?

TRD Intake maf scaling will be very close to the stock Air box scaling so no tuning required.

For the sort of monet a TRD intake cost gains will be minimal, you wont get much more than if you bought a $50 drop in dry filter for stock air box like Apexi filter. The other good thing about oft is you can onsell the whole system if you flash your car back to stock and loose less than probably $100 if you move on or sell car.

With Ecutek the tune/licence is not onsellable

Haltech is a complete replacement ECU and will cost thousands plus tuning.

Ecutek , Open Flash Tablet Tactrix/ecuflash/Brzedit ect alter the settings and parameters in the ecisting stock ECU so with tuning your up for $250 to $1000 depending on which system you choose and your skill levels at tuning.

If your just talking a naturally aspirated car with bolt on mods either find and Ecutek tuner locally then you can get a tune for about $500-600 with ecutek licience as you will not need to buy cable to flash (additional $350)

Or buy an openflash Tablet OFT and you get device and tunes for basic mods and e85 fuel included, very good if you have no local tuner all up cost $500 http://openflashtablet.com/Automotiv...OFT/index.html

Tuning needed for header installment?

I was going to purchase a header for my brz before I did anything to the muffler but now that I see it has to be "tuned" I might just settle for something easy, like a Berk Muffler delete.

I believe it's a yes. Needs oft, ecutek or a custom.

So dissapointed. Some other 86er mentioned that in a car meet when I said I was going to get the Borla header. Lost motivation after that, and this just re-assured it

Well the car will run, but you probably wouldn't notice much difference from what I've read

So, in short. Tuning is not required? but recommended?
