All the info I learned from tuning has come from this site, but their are a few things I am not clear about. Now I have a 14 BRZ, with an axle back, drop in filter, and a Perrin intake tube. That is considered stock, so I would need the ECUTEK 1 tune correct?

I have nothing, so I would need the ECUTEK, the cable, and the license, I am just confused on what exactly the license is, and what do I do with it. I know its not s literal license but still. I am not sure what its benefit is for the installation.

After purchasing this what happens if I do more mods and I want to do a stage 2 tune? Would I need to buy it again? Is there a way to just add it to the tablet I will have already owned?

And last question once I have everything, the tune is fairly simple to do right? You just plug it in, start the car on ACC II (engine off) and follow the directions right? Or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for all answers.

with your mods I would just get an OFT which you get stage 1 and 2 tunes for free on it. If get catless headers than you can use the stage 2 on it , or sell it then step up to ecutek

The license just allows you to use the ecutek tuning program on your car. The license, cable, and dongle are a one time purchase you don’t need to keep rebuying. If you change your mods and need a new tune you will need to either purchase a tune revision if it’s a “simpler mod” or a new tune all together.

You need a laptop to flash the tune to the car. The steps are pretty straight forward and easy. They will give you noob friendly step by step instructions. Most of the actual tunes for ecutek come with atleast one free revision so it will be more dialed in then a ots tune.

But depending on your future mod plans OFT could be a cheaper solution with almost as good results. Good for basic mods and “common” headers. But not recommended if going FI unless you know how to tune yourself.

Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated! I’m gonna look into OFT now. Thanks again

Update for anyone that might be curious. I've been running the E85 stg 2 tune from oft with a hi flow catted uel header and magnaflow catback and it is running great. Only issue I've had is cold starting in the mornings which I hear is a normal thing running E85 in the winter. But I'm super happy with what the tune provided. If anyone is looking for an easy and cheap reliable tune I would recommend it until you want to go for some heavier mods like boosting and such.

I'm thinking of going back to my stock FRS muffler from my Nameless track muffler because of the noise. Does anyone know how much horsepower I would lose if any.

Almost none, the stock catback flows pretty well.

How are Subaru dealers if your car is tuned for warranty claims?

Terrible regardless of tune.

Mine's pretty good, they pulled my motor for an oil leak under warranty, even though the car had a header and tune on it. Every dealer is different.

I suck at explaining what I want.

So my question is what it'll cost to run the flex fuel versus OFT and UEL header.

For the Flex fuel it'll be

649 for kit

749 for ecutek

UEL Header ~600

Anything else? Is there another tune that I need?

Of course labor if not installed by myself but that comes with either setup.

So total is 2,000, just double of the OFT OFH Combo?

Oh man reading this exchange. You explained perfectly well from the start. Other guy was not reading though he was trying to be helpful

bibbity boppity give me the zoppity

'17+ Update?

With the improved header in the '17+ cars, what happens to the "+5-8hp" gain, over a tune on stock header scenario? Seems like going to a UEL catless header will get me more/different sound, some improved mid range, possible inspections issues (in Texas?), but little, if any (or loss of) peak HP? From a peak HP standpoint, given the improved OEM header, seems like I'm better off just getting a tune for the stock system I'm running with Nameless axleback...which is already at the max noise level for me. With the improved fueling mentioned in the '17+ cars, are the gains of ~10hp for a tune alone also diminished with the '17 updates?

You're probably right. Dont spend a grand for a little more torque. A good tune is probably your best bet
